Tomas Darrow is a Westlander. He is the son of Dax Torellion and Elia Darrow.

Description

If there is ever a time when Tomas’s face and clothes are not covered in at least one layer of dirt, no one has ever seen it. He has auburn hair that gets redder the more sun he gets. It curls outrageously if it gets too long, so he began cutting it short as soon as he was allowed to choose his own hairstyle. His eyes are green, although a much paler shade than his mother’s. His complexion is a bit more swarthy than one would expect with his other features. He is neither large nor small; simply a boy with bruises on his shins and a mouse in his pocket likely as not.

Tomas is an active and imaginative boy, preferring to spend as much time as possible outdoors (this remains true well into his teenage years). He builds treehouses, boats, and other odd contraptions; climbs walls and buildings and sits atop them to read; stages vastly complicated mock battles with stuffed animals and tree trunks as his armies; collects rocks, sticks, feathers and other oddities; and even adopts the occasional wild animal (and cries when he inevitably has to release it). Thea is the only person Tomas ever asks to join him in his games, though if others wish to play he will not deny them.

His smiles and laughter seem endless, but under it all Tomas has many troubles. His bursts of anger confuse and frighten him, and while he wants to be happy his father is back, he struggles with feelings of resentment and distrust that manifest as “acting out” in unfortunate ways. He can be clingy and throw tantrums when Elia does not give him enough attention, and inversely can go completely silent and withdrawn if Dax gives him too much.

Biography

The first few years of Tomas’s life were perfect. Mama was around all the time. Sometimes she had to entertain visitors or work, but she was 'there'. Daddy would be there in the mornings and evenings, and sometimes they could go visit him during the day, too. Sometimes they got to see him fight, which was always exciting and a little scary. Sometimes he would read to them from his red book of stories, or chase them around the Gardens.

Those days seem golden in Tomas’ memory; unattainably distant, yet warm.

Daddy stopped coming home one day when they were four. Mama wouldn’t talk about it, but her upset feelings filled their quarters regardless. Eventually Mama got busy -very busy- and they started spending time with governesses and other caregivers. Mama still spent time with them in the evenings, but something was different and Tomas knew it had something to do with his father.

He and Thea were twins, but Tomas was the eldest. Thus he took it upon himself to make both Thea and Mama smile, to make sure everything was taken care of when it should be so they didn’t have to worry. During the day he played outside whenever he could. He explored every square inch of the Tower grounds (and as much of the Tower itself as he was allowed) and one night even ventured into the depths of the basements for a time.

Of course, just as he had begun to get used to his new reality...Dax returned and the world turned on its head once more.
