Biography

“Severian! Come in her my boy,” cried Severian's father. Looking up from what he was doing in his bedroom, Severian wondered what his dad could want. Knowing his father didn’t like to be kept waiting he quickly got up and head to the kitchen where he found his father sitting at the table and his mother stirring a pot over the nearby fire. Sensing something was going on, Severian slowly took a seat at the table. His father stared hard at him for a few moments. Raising an eyebrow, Severian looked over at his mother who quickly looked away. Looking back at his father, Severian decided to find out what was going on. “You called me Father?” The sound of his voice must have startled his dad since he jump a bit when he started to speak.

“Uh, yes son.” His father shot a glance at his mother before continuing, “Your 15 now and me and your mother have decided you need to make a choice as to what you want to do with your life. I know you have had some short practice with a few of the guards as well as worked in the shop with me.” Severian’s father smiled a bit, “You do have a talent at working with leather, son. Now you can go do what ever you want, but you need to decide now. “ Severian just sat there quietly. He really wanted to be in the military. As he was about to tell his parents what he wanted to do another thought crossed his mind. He wasn’t sure if they would take him with his limp. Severian’s thoughts soon traveled back to that day...

Severian was only eight when it happened. He had been playing in a street near his house with some of his friends. They were playing something with a ball; Severian couldn’t really remember what it was. All of a sudden a horse came racing around the corner. Hearing the noise all the kids looked up then tried to jump out of the way of the charging beast. Severian was a little to slow in moving was hit in the legs sending him flying with a very hard landing at the end. After coming to, he saw his parents around him then he felt the pain searing through his right thigh and hip. From somewhere near by he could hear someone tell his parents that he was luck in that he didn’t have any broken bones, but he had dislocated his hip and it had to be set back in place. A man came into Severian's view and started to talk to him. “Son, We are going to move you to my house. It’s going to be very painful and you’ll most likely pass out form the pain. Are you ready.” Well not really knowing what to say, Severian just nodded his head. The man had been right. As soon as they began to move him he passed out from the pain.

When Severian woke up he was alone in a strange room. He looked down at his leg and noticed that although there was still pain it was not nearly as bad as before. The man coming through the door interrupted his thoughts.

With a smile the man said, “I’m glad to see you awake.” He sat at the edge of the bed. “You suffered from a dislocated hip. Now we have put it back in place, but your going to have a slight limp and its going to hurt a little when it rains or its cold out. You should live a fine life despite that.” The man smiled again. “Your parents are going to take you home now. Your leg and hip is going to be sore for a few days so you’re going to have to take it easy.” The man stood up and went to the door. He called Severian’s parents in. While he was grateful to the man for helping him, it would be nice to just be home.

Severian looked up at his father, sitting across the table and then over at his mother, who was still trying to avoid his looks. With determination in his voice he stated, “I want to become a soldier.” He wasn’t sure what his father thought about it, his face was an unreadable mask. Slowly he nodded and stood up. “Ok then son, I’ll arrange for you to begin your training as soon as possible.” With that he left the house. Behind him Severian could hear his mother cry softly.

A few years later Severian sat at the edge of his bunk, slowly peeling off his armor. He had just finished a twelve-hour guard duty. While he wanted to be a soldier, this was not what he had in mind. “There most be something better I could be doing,” he thought to himself. He wasn’t the best swordsman by far, but he had been told enough times that he had some real talent at it. The sense of being held back trickled into the back of his mind. Heaving a heavy sigh, Severian finished taking off his armor and put on some civilian clothes. He was going to go meet some friends at the local tavern.

Stepping in to the tavern his friends saw him and gave up a small cheer. Smiling Severian wandered over and took an empty seat at the table. When the barmaid came around he ordered an ale. With beer in hand he began to shot the breeze with his pals. They talked about everything, from the good looking new bar maid to complaining about officers. Having a head start, most of Severian's friends ended up going home early or where dragged out to dance. That left him alone with his best friend, Jed. Severian was a little tipsy and started to tell Jed about his thoughts of being held back. After some careful thought, Jed began to tell Severian a story about some travels of his. He mentioned that he once stopped at a place called the Grey Tower. That it was place where both female and male channelers are gathering. He hinted that they have need for warders and guards and that if he where interested he would tell Severian where to go. Well Severian was not thinking straight and asked for the directions. After getting them he stood up and thanked Jed. He then began his track back to the barracks. He had guard duty again in 8 hours or so. It took him several days before deciding to leave Shienar in search of this Grey Tower. He informed his commanders and had a long talk to his parents, who still don’t understand his need to go. After saying his good byes, Severian began his track to find a new life.
