Sabine ni Hayadan t'Masin (born Sabine Hayadan) was a Saldaean Novice of the Grey Tower. During her test for Acceptance, she never returned from her second arch.

Description

Sabine arrived at the Grey Tower as a young woman of sixteen years, her light skin youthful and radiant. Her long, silky-black hair is always tied back in a simple ponytail or an elegant bun, tied back with several ribbons. Her fringe stops just above hooded black eyes, set delicately within their sockets, that seem entirely too intense for a person of her age. She would come across as austere, if not for her age and her singsong voice. Instead it makes her seem like a young girl imitating an older woman, which may be taken as endearing or exasperating, depending on the recipient.

Sabine was brought up in relative luxury, making her somewhat arrogant, and appreciative only for the finer things in life. The sudden and harsh switch to a life as a novice is not one she had any idea about, and the chance is jarring. Her expectations for herself and others fail to meet the reality of her new life, making her irritable and rebellious. However, she was brought up with a strong moral code, so she is trying her utmost, even if that falls short of the requirements set by her superiors. Furthermore, she can come across as closed off, as there are a number of facts about her past she wishes to be rid of.

Biography

Sabine Hayadan was the third-born child of Makari t'Bashere Hayadan, the head of a prestigious Saldaean house, and his wife Kariele ni Bashere t'Hayadan. She was raised in the opulent family estates in Irinjavar. Although Sabine had little chance of inheriting the family estates, she received some of the finest education that could be bought in Saldaea. This was principally so she could marry well for the benefit of the family name; House Hayadan already had royal links through Sabine's mother and maternal grandfather, and Makari Hayadan sought more for the house's continued and increasing prosperity.

Like most Saldaeans, Sabine was raised with a strong moral code. She was fiercely loyal to her family, especially to her two older brothers, whom she learnt how to ride horses alongside. She was also taught how to defend herself unarmed and with a dagger. Her tutors and extended family also did all they could to ensure Sabine would be highly sought after by various suitors, teaching her about Daes Dae'mar, how to recite poetry, the cultures and histories of various lands, how to play the cittern, about the Blight and the Shadow, etc. Their intent was to forge a social and intellectual powerhouse.

After her fourteenth nameday, suitors began to arrive in Irinjavar for Sabine. Both of her older brothers were already married, her two younger sisters being set up to follow her in her footsteps. She found herself showered by the attentions of many handsome lordlings, whilst their fathers conversed with Makari Hayadan. Sabine was able to put into use all of her knowledge, and found most of her would-be husbands lacking. Some were intellectually unstimulating. Others hadn't the social graces she thought proper for a young Saldaean lord. Only one passed both her own and her father's muster, Tarrin Masin. Tarrin was two years older than Sabine, handsome with brown eyes that made her breath catch, a quick wit that always made her laugh, and a shared passion over horses and music. Tarrin proposed after a few months, and Sabine accepted gladly. This had already been approved of by Sabine and Tarrin's fathers, and even if it was a formality, Sabine still found herself brimming with joy. Tarrin had proposed in the autumn, and the wedding was set for the summer. Tarrin had to return to his own family's estate shortly thereafter, so the two promised kept in contact through frequent letters.

That started creating doubts. Tarrin's first few letters were in line with his advances and his charm that she had seen in person, but over the course of the eight months leading to the wedding, the tone subtly changed. Tarrin's interest shifted marginally from their joint desires, to what he sought for their future. It wasn't that he was coming across as demanding, more that he was trying to manoeuver and manipulate her into agreeing with his dreams and aspirations. If she hadn't been so well educated in Daes Dae'mar, she may not have spotted it. She aired these concerns with her brothers, but they saw nothing amiss, and counselled against going to their father. She acquiesced, all the while fretting over her promised's change in character.

When the summer came, Sabine and her family travelled to the Masin estates in Maradon. Expecting the manipulator, Sabine was pleasantly surprised by Tarrin, who was back to being the man she had spent many a day and night with in Irinjavar. She never challenged the words that had been in his letters, assuaged by his charm and his wits and his love. They were married, the happiest day of Sabine's life up to that point. Sabine and Tarrin were gifted a country house just outside Maradon by Tarrin's father, and the newlyweds moved in shortly thereafter.

Things began to go wrong a month or so after the wedding. Tarrin was a loving husband, and none of those concerns from his letters ever resurfaced. Instead, a new problem appeared in the form of Tarrin's father. He started to impress his own plans and devices onto Tarrin, which in turn pressed a number of things upon Sabine. The foremost of these was a continuation of the Masin family line; Tarrin was his father's eldest son, and the eventual inheritor of his family's estate. But Tarrin also needed his wife to aid him in the running of the business. Trained through she was, this had not been the life she had intended or expected to lead. Tarrin's mood got darker as pressure was exerted upon him, and their relationship became more and more strained.

The relationship reached a breaking point. Sabine could not longer get through to Tarrin, she had duties and responsibilities to the business she did not want nor desire, and her father-in-law's manipulations could be felt everywhere in their lives. A deal to run away was formed. There was too much risk involved with returning to her own family; Saldaeans did not engage in Daes Dae'mar, even if Tarrin's father did, and they may not have understood the intensity of her concerns. She went on one of her regular horse rides into the countryside, but she had packed provisions and clothing and everything she needed for a journey away from Saldaea. She left a note for Tarrin, setting out all the problems in their lives, and the reasons for it. There was little chance that Tarrin would comprehend or believe all of it, which is why she had to run away by herself.

Eventually Sabine arrived at Illian. At some point along the trip, she came upon the notion of becoming a Hunter of the Horn. It mixed her passion for history with the need to find a new purpose for her life. She took the oath of a Hunter of the Horn in the Square of Tammaz shortly after arriving at the city. It was there that she met Fiona Trakand, a woman with aligned interest. The two of them made their way to Hama Valon, where Sabine was to search for clues about the Horn, whilst Fiona looked into becoming a novice. Being a friend, Sabine accompanied Fiona to the Grey Tower. To Fiona's dismay, she was not one who could be trained in the Power, but Sabine was. Before the Hunter had an opportunity to escape, she found herself in novice whites, and more surely trapped than she had been with her husband.

In the four years since, Sabine has begrudgingly accepted the Grey Tower as a home. In spite of her growing ability and confidence when it comes to the One Power, she still hopes that the Mistress of Novices will one day cast her out, so she can return to living a life freed from commitments or oversight.
