Description

Rory has an arthritic hip that the Yellows are having trouble Healing to full effect probably due to the fact that they rarely have the opportunity to work on arthritis. He has been happy to be their test subject, taking various herbal concoctions and going for treatments with new weaves that they create, really alterations or cobbled together bits of other weaves. He never feels worse for it so he keeps going back. At one point, they hit upon something that worked a bit better than everything else and the arthritic pain that was a near daily challenge to him subsided almost permanently, only recurring in the extreme cold or damp. He tends to study things that give even the most curious Browns pause. His deep study and deep thought about the shadow and the nature of good and evil have caused more than one person to question his affiliation with the Dark One. He is firmly in the Light, however his understanding of the Light and the Shadow are much deeper than the surface level of good and evil that most people live with. He is the epitome of a Brown and his chosen arena of study is shadow spawn, darkfriends and the morality thereof. One of his most favored activities is teaching others what he knows and challenging them to think in a deeper and more substantial way about true good and evil. His most cherished goal is to one day find an infant myrddraal and raise it for study. He believes there may be a chance that myrddraal can be turned to the light. At the very least, that a close study of their specific talents could be a useful advantage in the fight against the shadow.

Biography

When Rory was sixty years old and had spent more time in this library than in any other place in the world, including his own bed. His first visit to the Library found him in love. He was enraptured by the smells and the sights and the tantalizing promise of all of those books. He was given the duty of reading to some of the wealthy citizens and other visitors of the Library. He began finding several hours each week during which it became his habit to take a book to the orphanage near the Library and read to the children. Another year and he had begun to spend an equal amount of time at the city center where there was a fountain and several shade trees under which lovers and the old would make picnics. He began standing upon the edge of the fountain to read aloud to the assembled people. The people of the city began to call him Orator. When he was but seventeen years old, he met the woman who was to become the first thing he would ever love more than the Library. Hana was like a little bird. She became his favorite author and would often recite her poetry at the fountain before or after some other reading. Over the years, she gave him three sons and two daughters. She was there to see all five of their children married and both of her daughters have children. A desperate fever took her from them the winter that their youngest grandchild was born. It took years before he was able to face the readings at the fountain again and the thunderous applause that met his readings let him know that he was listened to and would be missed when one day he was gone. One day a young man met him near the fountain and was talking to men of the city and taking them back with him to discover if they could channel. If they could not, then they were being offered service to the new Dragon Reborn. Rory chuckled at the thought of himself becoming dragonsworn and running off to fight in the Last Battle, limp and all. Still it was a fancy that delighted him in the musing. He eventually decided he nothing left to lose and went with the man back to the Black Tower. It turned out that he was able to learn to channel and did. But he missed the books and the study in a library so he left there and came to the Grey Tower where he could be among the tomes he loved so much.
