Riahana Tomosan (born Riahana Ferria) is a Saldaean Blademaster and the current Master of Training of the Grey Tower. She is married and bonded to Gareth Tomosan.

Description

Riahana Tomosan stands at five feet, seven inches, and has a thin, athletic build thanks to her time working the farm, and riding horses. Her ice blue eyes are a striking contrast given her very dark brown, almost black hair. Those eyes light up when she smiles, or laughs, and are almost piercing when she's angry, or upset.

Ria tends to arch her left brow when she's skeptical about something, though she'll arch it at other times, too.

Riahana would lean towards stubborn, something else she inherited from her family. When she's made up her mind about something, she'll see it through until its done.

Despite her stubbornness, though, Ria is easy to get along with, and tends to be in good spirits, ready to laugh at jokes, but just as ready to put her head down and get to work when the need is there.

Biography

Tianna Ferria, daughter of Miahala Sha'hal, gave birth to six children, four of those being from two sets of twins. Darie and Hala Ferria were one of those sets of twins. All of Tianna's children grew up on the horse farm she and her husband owned, and all had a love of horses. Darie, though, stayed on the farm as he grew into an adult, and continued working it with his parents. It was through the barn that he met his Solodia Dotin, who eventually became his wife, Solodia Ferria.

Darie and Solodia didn't marry until their mid-twenties, and did not think they would be blessed with children. The Wheel has a funny way of Weaving things, though, and Darie and Solodia were blessed with a baby when they were in their early to mid thirties. They named the little girl Riahana, and raised her on her Grandmother's horse farm, teaching her all they knew of horses and riding almost as soon as she was old enough to walk.

Riahana grew up understanding the bond between horse and rider, and knew how precious that link could be. She grew up with a love of working the great beasts, and getting lost in the moment... relishing those times when horse and rider were one unit... seamless in everything. She was an equestrian... it was in her blood, after all.

Not only did Riahana grow up learning the ways of the horse, but she grew up hearing the extraordinary tales of her Great Grandmother, Miahala. Tales of battles of the Grey Tower, of adventure, and mystery. Riahana was a child with a vivid imagination, and would vision herself as one of the great channelers or warders on the battlefield. She would let these childhood imaginations lull her to sleep at night, and, as a young child, would pretend to be an Aes Sedai or Warder as she played with her friends in their imaginary battles.

It was of little surprise when Riahana announced on her tenth birthday that she wished to go to the Grey Tower and follow in the footsteps of her Great Grandmother.

"Child... you've shown no Spark. They will test you, and what if they find you are no channeler?" her always pragmatic mother asked.

To this, the almost precocious Riahana quirked a slight smirk, "Then I shall ask to train in the Warder Yards as a warrior." She inclined her head, "As channeler or warder... I still walk the path I've imagined since I was but a child."

Darie and Solodia couldn't help but look to one another, fighting the urge to chuckle at their girl's comment. "You are still but a child, Ria, but then, you are our only daughter... thus will always be our little one." Darie flashed her a warm smile, "In seven years time, if you still desire to follow this path, I will take you to the tower myself."

Ria was far from spoiled, though she was privileged compared to some. Her father's words, though, were the best birthday gift she could have hoped for.

Seven years passed, and her interest in going to the Tower never waned. Other interests came to her like her love of music. She found she could sing, though she'd never be called a great bard. Her voice was pleasant enough, though, around a campfire, and she enjoyed singing to entertain.

Riahana's love of horses was bred into her, and she continued working on her skills as a rider. She would be considered a very good rider, but not expert... not yet. Her equitation was solid, and she'd recently started learning advanced skills. She'd already shown an aptitude for jumping, but was forced to learn patience. Jumping was more fun, but... without form learned from equitation and other advanced techniques, a rider could ruin a good horse by jumping before either horse or rider were ready.

Boys. Boys were not an interest that Riahana'd yet developed, though they'd developed an interest in her. She wasn't overtly beautiful, but she was far from plain with her icey blue eyes and dark brown, nearly black hair. She was striking, and boys would flirt. She'd giggle and call them silly, but that is as far as anything got with them. For Riahana, her interests were elsewhere, and she would not be deterred.

When the day finally came for her to travel to the tower, her mother hugged her tightly, and promised Ria to behave. "You cannot expect to live on the coat tails of your Great Grandmother... do not expect special treatment just because you are blood."

"I would not dream of it, Mother. I will pass or fail on my merits... and will not allow failure to grace our family name," Riahana replied. She'd already considered what might come if people knew of her relationship to Miahala Sha'hal. She intended not to brag about it because she didn't want people to see her and say, "That is Miahala's great granddaughter."

Darie traveled with his only child and bestowed upon her every ounce of wisdom he could think of as they traveled to the Tower. He fretted over her like a parent would. His little girl was growing up. Their arrival at the Tower was bittersweet. Soon... his daughter would be traveling her own path and it was time for him to let her go... let her grow into the woman she would become.

The pair were met at the gate and announced who they were. There was a flurry of activity as they were led to a small garden, where they were told to wait. Even Darie fidgeted somewhat. It had been too long since he'd seen his Grandmother and, despite his age, he felt giddy with excitement.

"Father, would you sit? Your pacing is making me nervous," Riahana teased.

With a soft laugh, Darie did sit next to his little girl. "You are sure about this, Ria?"

"There is no doubt in my mind, Father," Riahana said with a warm smile.

Meanwhile, a runner had been sent to the office of the Mistress of Novices. The Tower Guards well knew the Captain General and so when it was announced as her family, they were escorted to the Courtyard of the Green Ajah. The runner found the Aes Sedai free, much to the gladness of the Green, who was eager to see her grandson and great-granddaughter.

"Darie, Riahana," Mia said warmly as she hurried into the Courtyard. Her ageless features were quite plain by now, but the ageless aspects seemed to melt away when her expression was a warm one like it was now. "I received your letter about your coming. It's so good to see you both."

Both father and daughter stood when they saw Mia. Darie smiled warmly. "Grandmother, it is wonderful to see you. You look well, as always. Mother, Kel and Solodia send their love, of course."

Riahana looked to her Great Grandmother with a warm smile, but also a look of awe. "Greetings, Great Grandmother." On the farm, she likely wouldn't have been so formal, but here?

The Aes Sedai gestured at the benches. "Shall we sit?" she said. "Now, am I to understand you want to see if you can learn how to Channel?" Mia, never one to mince words, asked Riahana. She already knew that the girl did not have the Spark, as such things could be sensed between women Channelers. But learning required testing.

Nodding, Ria let the smile grow a bit as she took a seat next to Miahala. "Yes, I do. If I do not have the ability, then... then I would learn to fight in the Warder yards." She didn't mince words, either, and tended to be pragmatic despite her imagination.

Miahala smiled. If Ria didn't have the ability to learn, she wondered how Caden would feel about having his great-granddaughter-in-law be in his Warder Yards. "Well, then let us not delay," she said. After a brief pause, she opened herself to the One Power, surrendering and embracing. It filled her and let the world come alive and the channeled a small flame. She was of the age to not need hand gestures to concentrate, so the flame simply appeared off to one side.

There was no resonance and she dropped the flame. "I'm sorry, my dear. You do not have the ability," she said. "However, I'm sure that the Warder Yards will be glad to have you."

The young woman smiled and lowered her eyes. She had no way of knowing whether she could Channel or not, but... she felt little disappointment. If truth be told, there was a spark of something within Riahana. It felt right. The smile grew a bit. "I hope so. I'm eager to learn... to prove myself."

"Then I'm sure you'll do just fine," Mia said with a smile. "The Sha'hal blood runs strong for stubbornness." She looked up to her grandson. "I can see her to the Training Yards, but you're free to remain at the Tower to visit for a while. Ria will soon be busy with training, but I'd enjoy catching up and you can meet Haeden."

Darie gave Riahana a warm smile, though the worry was hard to miss. His little one was growing up. Looking to Mia, the smile grew, and he nodded, "I would enjoy the visit, Grandmother. We do not get to see each other oft enough."

And so it was that Riahana began on her path as a Warder-in-training.
