Rhykana Meran is an Andoran Accepted of the Grey Tower.

Description

Personality

Rhykana is not the same person she was when she arrived at the Tower. But the Tower has not restored her to what she once was, an energetic and clever girl; rather, Rhykana has been shaped into a new, more dangerous mold. She is driven, both in her studies and her own personal vendetta. She has a thirst for knowledge that is never satisfied; of books, other people, and the One Power. With each new thing, her curiosity grows. Her curiosity is fueled by the need to be powerful and in control.

She has developed a new understanding of the worth of others. Rhykana is quick to see faults in other people, and values only those who are useful. Not necessarily useful to her; Rhykana simply has a deep respect for people who cultivate themselves and their skills, and no use for people who waste their own time. She has grown used to isolation and independence, and has no use for friends and superfluous social interactions.

Although she has learned to keep her features composed, emotion often gets the better of her. She is an instinctive person, prone to reacting on her gut instincts. She is quick to anger, and quicker to act. Only rarely, when it matters most, is she able to control her temper and act only with logic.

After emerging from the arches, Rhykana has a better understanding of herself. She no longer sees herself as protector of women or a fighter for justice; she has finally realized that those labels were a thin veneer for her true desires. She has a taste for retribution and torture, but is generally denied those outlets due to her position as an Accepted. Rhykana has a strong desire to enforce her will on other people, to prove to herself and others that she is powerful.

She has begun to realize the danger of the Black Ajah, although that has not deterred her from pursuing it. Rhykana no longer trusts her previous mentor, Lydarian Sedai. As she has begun to discover her own talents in Compulsion, she has realized that Lydarian manipulated her with the One Power. Now, finally understanding that the only person she can trust is herself, Rhykana has set out to understand and conquer the Black Ajah.

Appearance

Rhyka is not tall, and has a slim figure. She is uncomfortable with her own curves, and rather prefers the way the clothing required of initiates of the Tower masks her body. However, Rhyka forces herself to stand confidently with good posture. She has begun to cultivate a more put together appearance, and does her best to tend to her hair and her clothing.

She is a pretty woman. Her face is heart shaped, and though her nose is slightly too big for her face, her light blue eyes are enough of a distraction. Her chin is well defined, and she has fairly prominent cheekbones. When she smiles widely, she is a bit apple cheeked. Rhyka’s hair is a light brown, with a little bit of blond, and has a gentle wave. She wears her hair short, only just brushing her shoulders.

Biography

Rhykana was born to a simple family of servants in Caemlyn. Her early years were cheerful, despite the fact that her mother and father worked long hours. Her elder brother, Aerin, raised her, although he was not much older than she. They ran wild together through the streets of Caemlyn, and Rhykana loved her brother fiercely. Of course, they both learned at their parent's knees; to read, to write, and the art of service. Rhykana loved those lessons just as much.

Her younger sister, Navane, was born when Rhkyana was still young. She took it into her head to protect her little sister just as her brother had done for her, and spent a great deal of time with her baby sister. Caring for Navane brought joy to her life, and Rhykana found herself growing up faster, just so that she would have the knowledge to care for her little sister. Her childhood disappeared with each new responsibility, but Rhykana could not find it in herself to mind.

When she was of age to work, Rhykana's parents helped her find a job in the kitchens at the home of the same noble family her family had always worked for. Rhykana had little taste for the job; it was noisy and hot, and every smart comment earned her a smack with a spoon and a new chore. But she adapted quickly, and learned to move fast and hold her tongue when she needed to.

It was then that she meant Derin Caeldor, the young lordling. Rhykana had heard of him; that he loved wine and sport. She had also heard less savory rumors- that he loved whipping dogs as much as training him, and that he had a heavy hand with servants. But he was kind to her, and always had a wink and a coin for her when she fetched him food. Rhykana liked him, despite her brother's warnings, and she trusted him.

It did not take long for her to realize her mistake. One day, when she brought Derin breakfast, as had become customary, he held her back from returning to the kitchens. She told no one of the rape and her new bruises; she hardly understood what had happened, and he told her casually of the things she would do to her sister if she told. She returned to the kitchens, dazed and trembling, just in time to get a lashing from the head chef for her lateness.

After that, Rhykana's life changed. There was no escape from Derin's attentions and heavy hand, and Rhykana found herself hiding her bruises from her family. She withdrew from them and her friends, and found that she hardly had anything to say to them anymore. As the months passed and Derin's interest never waned, even her love for her sister seemed terribly distant. She ran from Derin, just once, overcome by fear and shame. She hid in the city for a time, and crept home to find her sister shivering in their shared room, her body covered in the bruises that should have been Rhykana's. She learned then who she was; that she would let others take the punishment meant for her, even her family. It burned her that she had so knowingly left Navane to the rape meant for her.

It would have continued, if not for a visiting Aes Sedai. Rhykana was bringing a meal to Derin's chambers when she encountered a regal woman in the hallway, who could only be the Aes Sedai who had come to the Caeldor's household for some reason that Rhykana was not important enough to know. The Aes Sedai told her that she could channel, and that she would be taken to the Grey Tower. Rhykana seized the chance to go, although she knew that Derin's attentions would likely turn to her sister at her absence; she cared for nothing but her own escape.
