"The One Power comes from the True Source, the driving force of creation, the force the Creator made to turn the Wheel of Time. Saidin, the male half of the True Source, and saidar, the female half, work against each other, and at the same time together to provide that force... The True Source cannot be used up, any more than the river can be used up by the wheel of the mill. The Source is the river; the Aes Sedai, the waterwheel."

One Power Strength

Reference: With information borrowed from Raina's Library, here is a reference demonstrating the relative One Power strengths of some of the characters in the Wheel of Time books. Originally part of the 21-grade scale as a reconstruction of the scale Robert Jordan himself used, it is fully researched and accurate, giving a precise idea as to the varying strengths. However as to make things a bit simpler for us here at the Grey Tower, it has been broken down into ten grades, including a 10+ grade which would be a near impossible strength for any character to reach, as even in the Age of Legends there were only two men in all the world who were of its level (Ishamael and Lews Therin). Without further ado, here is the listing.

Note: Keep in mind the fact that most male channelers will be much higher up on the list than women. Not necessarily level 9 and 10, as that is very rare, but due to the way they seize saidin they can manage to channel much larger amounts of the One Power than women.

Five Powers

"There are threads to the One Power, and each person who can channel the One Power can usually grasp some threads better than others. These threads are named according to the sort of things that can be done using them - Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit - and are called the Five Powers... While Spirit was found equally in men and in women, great ability with Earth and/or Fire was found much more often among men, with Water and/or Air among women."[1]
"To the channeller, the flows seem to originate in his or her very immediate vicinity, not to emanate from themselves, although to another channeller, those flows do seem to be emanating from the channeller. The latter is the actual case, as the One Power is passing through the channeller, one of the reasons for individual limits on how much of the Power a particular person can handle. (And you have seen characters react as if to a blow from having a flow snapped or cut.) A channeller sees the flows as colored very faintly, according to which of the Five Powers is involved (red = Fire, Blue = Water, green = Earth, yellow = Air, white = Spirit), although the "feel" of the flows are also different to a channeller, so that a channeller can tell one from another without actually seeing them. (That is how someone can tell that somebody else has channelled, say, Fire and Earth, in their vicinity without seeing the flows.) It isn't a physical feel; you might almost as well say that they have different flavours. They appear to be smooth and nearly transparent, tinged with colour."[2]
