Nykolai Deoddyn is a Tar Valoner Ji'val of the Grey Tower.

Description

In appearance, Nyk looks just like his older brother, Brec Asha'man, except that he is about a foot taller and a little more muscular. In personality, Nyk is nearly a complete opposite of Brec. He is stubborn and very proud, as well as very defiant and rebellious. While Brec had a healthy respect for Aes Sedai, Nyk despises any sort of rank system or anyone considering themselves to be better than anyone else. Other than looks, the only thing Nyk has in common with Brec is a hatred for their father, Kyrt.

Biography

"Nykolai Deoddyn! Get in here this moment."

Nyk grimaced. Father had been snappish ever since Brec had left home, but the tendency had gotten worse over the past year. Nyk was actually growing to look more like Brec every day, and Kyrt, his father, was not pleased. Nyk's facial structure and appearance closely resembled Brec at the age when he left, even though Nyk was at least a foot taller than Brec had ever been. His eyes were another distinguishing feature from Brec at age fourteen. Nyk and Brec had the same color and shape of eyes, but Nyk's always had a mischievous glint.

Nyk scrambled to stand up and run into the butcher shop, where his father was waiting impatiently. "How long have you been lazing about, boy? You're supposed to be working, but every time I look up, you're on break!"

Nyk looked defiantly down at his father. "I've only taken one break today, and I'd only been out there for a few minutes," he lied. He was already an inch taller than the man, and he made a point to raise up to his full height, trying to intimidate his father. It didn't work.

"My first boy is a flaming channeler, and my second is a bloody liar! What did I ever do?" Kyrt was able to see right through the lies and deceit, but that didn't stop Nyk from trying. He had a stubborn streak like a mule. Kyrt slapped Nyk's cheek with the flat of the blade he held. "Now, run this delivery to the Aes Sedai. And be back on the double. If you don't come back in five minutes, you will wish that you'd never been born."

The blade had stung Nyk's face and had nicked his jaw. However, like his stubborn streak, Nyk held his pride high. He would never cry in front of anyone, especially his father. Brec had cried a lot when he still lived with them in Tar Valon, but Nyk was almost a complete opposite of Brec, despite their similar features. Nyk clenched his fists, but took the package and departed from the store.

It was really all the fault of the stupid Aes Sedai that his father was like this. If they hadn't said that Brec could channel so he would have to leave, Brec would still be the scapegoat in the family. Nyk, with his sister, had been Father's favorites. Now, all of Kyrt's fury had turned against Nyk, leaving his sister unjustly unscathed. Nyk's relationship with his father had dwindled, thereby making Kyrt angrier at the second son.

Nyk meandered through the streets, a scowl deepening on his face. He arrived at the house where the two Aes Sedai lived, put the package on their doorstep, and knocked on the door. He darted down the street before they opened the door, not wanting to see them. His disgust for the Aes Sedai ran deep, rooted in their history with Brec and the fact that they always wanted people to grovel and bow before them. He hated anyone that thought they were better than everyone else.

On his way back to the butcher shop, Nyk started to devise a plan. He wouldn't stay here any longer. If his father was so ashamed of him, he would just leave. If Kyrt put him in the same category as Brec, he would actually join Brec at the Grey Tower. Obviously, Nyk wasn't as defiled as Brec… he couldn't channel. Maybe they had Warders at the Grey Tower like they did at the White Tower. If not, Nyk would just go somewhere else. His father wouldn't miss him. Maybe his friends and coconspirators would, but they were about the only ones. If Nyk could live without them, they could live without him. Nyk skirted through an alley and onto another main street to avoid the butcher shop. He would leave immediately.
