Lucius al'Meerin is a Hama Valoner Soldier of the Grey Tower.

Description

Striking in appearance, Lucius obviously comes from healthy bloodlines. His hair black like onyx, with eyes green and sharp and penetrating. He always looks inquisitive and bright, with a hint of cheeky defiance that will keep him under watchful eye around his superiors. Some might call him pretty, others handsome. Yet he bears a striking resemblance to his adoptive uncle Jasrin. The two are of a similar height since Lucius underwent a recent growth spurt. Luc also had an olive complexion to his skin that he felt gave him a somewhat exotic appearance. He did not mind the comparison anyhow. Jasrin was a man he very much looked up to and wished to emulate. The Battle Ajah M'hael. That would surely be Lucius's Ajah one day.

Lucius is a kind, warm-hearted person though to other initiates in the Tower he might seem spoiled and a little well fed. He has spent most of his life barely separated from his twin sister and this has meant he is unused to making other friends of his age. During his upbringing, his mother would often take him to help work rounds in the infirmary - but that only involved interaction with folk who were mostly much older. He will find the initial adaptation period in becoming an initiate very difficult.

Biography

Lucius was truly afraid for the first time in his life. He had spent fifteen years of life, enjoying being pampered and treated to everything he could ever wish for. His mother had been First Weaver of the Yellow Ajah and then raised to the Mistress of Novices. She had also been close in the councils of Jasrin Arendil, who was the M'hael. Jasrin had taken a liking to the two twins - he was like their favourite uncle - and had always seen they were given great comfort and many pleasurable experiences. In fact, Jasrin had made Luc's twin a future Lady of his estates in Arad Doman. For now, mother was Lady Protector until Seffonia came of age on her Eighteenth Naming Day. And as for Luc... Jasrin intended to bequeath a number of his estates in Cairhien to him. Apparently the good fellow wished that the House of Al'Meerin should be highly prominent in both of those nations.

That had always been the life Lucius had envisioned. Extravagant meals shared with influential guests, luxurious trips to exotic nations as honoured foreign dignitaries, ruling over lands with a just and generous hand. The twins were not selfish sorts - they would be the kind of rulers who were loved by their subjects... they would see that their people were fed, their lands developed, their culture improved and enriched. Truly, they had the kind hearts and generous spirits bestowed upon them by their mother. Yet there was another side to their persona: one that enjoyed great comfort and ostentatious opulence. They loved their trips away from the Tower to stay in one of their future estates - sleeping in downy feather beds draped in silks and velvets of every hue. Sharing a cup of well-watered wine that a kindly servant allowed them. They often whispered together of the pleasures they would both enjoy when they came into their inheritance. Lord and Lady Al'Meerin.

Probably Seffonia had given their situation a good deal more consideration. They had known for a long time that the spark would manifest itself in them eventually. But somehow Lucius had always assumed they would not need to go through the traditional training that others were forced to undergo. Surely she and uncle Jasrin could make some special arrangement? He and Seffy wouldn't need to suffer in one of those tiny cells the initiates had to sleep in? They wouldn't have to face the terrifying discipline of the Aes Sedai and Asha'man? Even when their mother had spoken of it, he assumed it was just an idle threat to keep them in line... but now he knew differently...

A grim-faced Asha'man was half-leading, half-dragging him along a path of winding corridors. It seemed the fellow was none too happy about being handed the menial task of taking a new initiate to be enrolled. Did he not know who Lucius was?! And where was his sister? He did not feel complete without her close. He knew that soldiers and novices were kept strictly separate in the Tower... but surely he and Seffy would be allowed to bend such rules? The further the day proceeded, the less confident he became in his supposedly blessed existence. After all, he was far from the first initiate who was a child of a high-ranking member of the Tower... and he had not heard of any special treatment given to anyone before. What a fool he had been, to imagine it would be different for them!

Lucius did not even listen as he was herded into the Master of Soldier's office whilst notations were made in a book. That indicated that he was now formally indoctrinated as a soldier. Now he would be shown his little corner of a cell which he would be forced to share with another soldier - who might be a brute or a ruffian or worst! And he would have to surrender his fine clothes and put on coarse black wool and cloth.

Before he knew it, Lucius was sat alone in the stark surroundings of his new quarters. His clothing itched at him. His bed mate had not come back from classes as yet... Lucius had been told he would be spared from chores and lessons until the next day. For now, he merely lay on the hard rough mattress of his cot and closed his eyes... thinking of Seffonia. He had decided something. He would rise through the ranks quickly. He would become an Asha'man. And then no one would tell him what to do! His new life began that day.
