Leiana Rothan is a Tairen Novice of the Grey Tower.

Description

Leiana's eyes are large, round and a deep shade of dark blue. She wears her long, dark, curly hair loose down her back. She is a rather tiny woman, short in stature and slender to the point of skinny. She barely reaches 5' and her baby-like face lends itself to youth. She is often mistaken for a much younger child.

Leiana is a very quiet girl. This personality trait is not due to shyness, but to her ability to patiently listen to everyone. She takes a long time to collect her thoughts and voice her opinion - if she voices it at all. She is extraordinarily observant, with the ability to melt into her surroundings so most don't even notice her presence until she stands or speaks.

Leiana is slow to anger, believing the best of everyone. While she is forgiving of many insults, she does not forget them. She has a tiana has pale, but creamy colored skin. Her eyes are endency to remember even the smallest of slights. This remembrance is not hidden baggage to harbor resentment or anger, but more like a tool that she can pull out and use later to her advantage. She is a master at using someone's own words against them.

Biography

Leiana lay quietly, listening to the hushed voices floating up from the room below. She was supposed to be sleeping, like her two sisters Aivry and Cailee. Sleep, however, could not come for her; not when the adults downstairs were deciding her future without her input.

"She is much too young," insisted Leiana's mother.

"Most girls begin their training at this age and some are even younger."

"If she doesn't receive proper training now, she will eventually hurt someone, even herself. She can even become violently ill. If she were to fall ill, death is almost certain."

"Are you trying to frighten me? Do you think I will hand her over to strangers because you claim that she might die?"

"We only want to help."

"No. I will not let you take her."

Leiana clenched her fists and gritted her teeth. Her mother would not be moved, not even if all the Aes Sedai in the world descended upon Tear. Aes Sedai instilled much more fear these days. There were the Seanchan to watch out for, the White Tower Aes Sedai, the Black Tower Asha'man and now this Grey Tower with both Aes Sedai and Asha'man. Her mother nearly fainted at the idea of Aes Sedai and Asha'man working together willingly.

The world was on the brink of great change. So much was at stake. Leiana knew full well that trollocs were not make-believe fairy creatures, like so many of them had believed before. She also knew the the Dark One was real, and that he would break free if the Aes Sedai and Asha'man didn't learn to work together to stop him. Not everyone understood that. Many of them still lived in fear of male channelers. This was not a time to be afraid.

"If we don't take her, the Seanchan will surely capture her," a demanding voice floated up.

"You don't want to see your daughter on one of those detestable leashes, do you?"

There was a long moment of silence. Leiana held her breath in anticipation. The idea alone of working for that loathsome race from across the ocean made her stomach twist in knots. Surely her mother would be convinced.

"Get out of my house. You are no longer welcome, Aes Sedai." The icy, formal tone from her mother made Leiana shrink under the covers. Aes Sedai were to be respected and highly honored. No one told them what to do, yet her mother did.

Leiana knew she only had one choice. It was a decision she had been harboring over for weeks, even before the Aes Sedai arrived for testing. She would run away and join the Grey Tower against her mother's wishes. She had to do it, to prove herself. Her elder sister, Aivry, had proven herself enough to win an engagement with a small noble House. She would carry the family into a new social class, something almost unheard of. Then there was her baby sister, Cailee. She, being the baby, was so spoiled and adored that she could do no wrong. Herself, on the other hand, had no great accomplishments and no prospects of any kind. Except for the fact that she had the spark inborn. Aivry didn't have it, and it was too soon to rule out Cailee's abilities, as she was only ten. Leiana would be an Aes Sedai.

When the last candle was snuffed out, and the rhythmic breathing could be heard echoing against the walls, Leiana knew her parents were fast asleep. She carefully slipped out of bed. Tip-toeing, she donned her clothes and shoes; snatched the knapsack which had many belongings already packed (after all, she had already decided it might come to this and was well prepared) and made her way down the ladder from the loft to the main room. In no time at all, she was out the door.

She arrived in the small town closest to her family's little farm and hurried to the inn. She kept the hood pulled up on her face, hoping no one would recognize her as she darted through the common room and up the stairs. The inn was small, and she was sure the Aes Sedai would be staying in the largest of the rooms at the end of the hall. She rapped hard on the door and held her breath.

When it opened, Leiana dropped into a deep curtsy. Relief escaped her lips at the sight of the Aes Sedai who had been in her home that evening. She pulled back her hood and looked up. "Aes Sedai, I must go. Please, take me to the Grey Tower."

Little did she know just what she was asking...
