Kiani Al'Jaqhar is a Saldaean Green Aes Sedai of the Grey Tower.

Description

Kiani is a slight woman, reaching five feet two inches if she stretches to her full height. Her heritage, the gifts from both her mother and father, would allow Kiani to grow into her own, possessing the fierceness that was trademark for Saldaeans from her father, as well as her hooked nose, stiff temper and slanted eyes. Her mother was a Domanii, one of those dancers whose movements could make men’s blood boil. From her, Kiani inherited her complexion, her blue-gray eyes, her lithe movements, and her mother’s beauty. Though of course this didn’t keep her from getting into her fair share of fights with village boys, and doing things that normally women wouldn’t do. She has raven dark hair that goes about halfway down her back, and it is threaded through with raven’s feathers, one for each Darkfriend she has brought to justice for the Light and Green Ajah. Kiani’s temper was something of a legend during her time as a Novice, and it didn’t temper much as an Accepted, but it allowed her to channel that anger into her desire to fight the Shadow. She has a desire to learn all that she can to defeat the Dark One and to keep Tarmon Gai’don at bay for as long as she can.

She has four Warders: Jak al’Car, an Andoran, Zekiel Lundri, a Domanii Asha’man, Hiram Barada, a Saldaean, and Kai Alseef, from Tear. Her four Warders protect her like the points of a compass, and her Asha’man warder helps her to keep herself grounded, knowing the Power can be used against her at any moment.

Biography

Saldaea is by no means an easy place to live, the mountains and snowy terrain within offering little shelter from the bitter cold. To the north, the Blight hovers, sinister, and pushes forward each year a little more. But this place, this harsh reality, is where Kiani al’Jaqhar thrived. She was born in a small town near the Blightborder, called Irinjavar. The Blight could be seen in the distance, the tips of the watchtowers visible from every point within the town. Kiani had looked at those towers often, hungering for them. She wanted to go into the Blight and fight, like her father did, against the creatures of the Shadow. Her father was a soldier, a role model of hers, and Kiani wanted to make him proud of her, act like the son he never had and become a soldier.

She was a source of vexation to her mother, pride from her father, but loved them both with all her being.

When she was 13, her father brought her into the Blight, on a routine patrol he and a few other men of the village were conducting. Kiani found this the most exciting notion she had ever thought of, at least until the Blight came within sight. Then, she felt the presence of the decay around her, and wished she were gone. Not far into the Blight, her father and the rest of the men came across a band of Trollocs, showing signs of making ready for a raid against one of the border towns. The men rose to the occasion, summoning up strength to do their duty and protect the women and children left at home. Kiani was left, alone, in the dark, while her father fought. She didn’t know anything of what was going on, until the sounds of battle died. She staggered out of her hiding place, taking in the carnage of men, not Trollocs, around her. Kiani thought her father dead, her notion supported by the carcass of his white warhorse close by. She walked home, stiff, dead to the world, and that incident changed her life, tying her ever closer to defeating the Shadow.

Once back at her home, her mother mourned, as rightly she should, and she and her daughter moved to Tar Valon, where her mother had family. Kiani took up a job as a tavern maid while her mother weaved. One morning not more than six months after she had come to Tar Valon, as Kiani was working, two Aes Sedai, along with their Warders, came into the tavern, peering about intently. Kiani had moved to wait on them, when one of them had smiled. “You have the ability,” she had said. “Come. You must go to the Tower with us, to train.” Kiani made a move to protest, to wish to see her mother again, but the Aes Sedai assured her that her mother would be informed. And so began Kiani’s life at the Tower.

Once there, Kiani found that she didn’t quite fit in as a Novice. She was forever getting into trouble, thinking about her family, practicing as hard as she could with saidar, making herself stronger, and always watching the Aes Sedai, to judge what they did. She kept to herself, most times, not meeting many people or making many friends, deciding instead to go to the stables, or the Gardens, to think. She grew adept at handling the Power, especially weaves having to do with Healing and affecting the weather. These weren’t typical aspects valued by the Green Ajah, but Kiani had always hoped to be one of them, those fierce women who constantly battled the Shadow. Having a few Warders around couldn’t hurt either.

Her time as a Novice seemed to pass all too quickly (even though in reality it was six years), then all but seemed to stop one fateful day, a few weeks before she faced her fears within her Arches at the age of 19. A letter from her mother, written before she passed on. The knowledge, along with it, that her mother was dead. Kiani thought of herself as an orphan, abandoned, with only the Tower as her family. Then came the real blow: news of her father’s survival, of his living somewhere in Tar Valon. Living in Tar Valon, with another woman. And the news that he was a Darkfriend. Kiani was so upset about that, about having her father be a Darkfriend, that from that moment on she was dedicated to fighting the Shadow.

From that moment on, Kiani’s life had a direction. She began to train, heavily, in using saidar, trying to master what she was able to do. She met men, who offered to teach her weapons, who offered to help her fight, but the backed out on her, muttering vague excuses as to why they wouldn’t assist her. Due to her dedication, her Accepted hood took her 5 years, allowing her to test herself at the age of 24. And then, then, came the fateful day when she went down to her Arches. The Mistress of Novices, and Kiani entered the arches in trepidation, coming out again shaken, seeing death, by her own hand, by her own actions, by her father, and seeing triumph on a field of battle, as a Green.

She dedicated herself to the Green, pushing towards fighting. Kiani had found a symbol for herself, after her mother had sent the letter. A raven’s feather, dropping into her hand, had been her symbol, a symbol for her of her conquest against the Shadow. For each Darkfriend who she brought to justice, a raven’s feather would be added. Feathers decorated her hair for bringing Darkfriends to justice, men who abandoned their families as her father did to pursue a life dedicated to the Shadow. If it was only to help a few families, Kiani would do whatever she needed to, if only to help the families that had been shattered by one man’s decisions.

Her quest was personal. Tarmon Gai’don was approaching, and, the Light as her witness, it would end with the Light winning, thanks, maybe in small part, to the efforts of Kiani. Hunting Darkfriends is her life’s work.

Kiani, after the destruction of the White Tower, navigated like the rest of her Ajah and sisters towards the Grey Tower. This had not been, obviously, Tarmon Gai'don, and she still had a battle to prepare for. They all did . Only with this new philosophy in place could that dream and any hope of winning remain a reality.
