Biography

The Journal of Jostin Semmeth

Third Day after the Feast of Abram,

This is our fifth day wandering through the woods. We move with great haste, for we are pursued. My guides say that they are taking me back to Andor, and indeed the stars confirm that we are heading westward. I hope my pursuers are more ignorant of these woods than my guides; I shudder to think of what they will do to me if I am caught. By my bones, this whole mess is so utterly foreign to me. To think, that Aes Sedai are chasing me. My guides have explained why they are after me, but it is still surreal. To think, I might be able to touch the One Power one day! Of course, it is my ill luck that this fact was discovered by the Red Ajah and then my guides long before I suspected anything. It was into this situation my guides came to me. They will not tell me their names; they are the Eyes and Ears of someone important and must preserve their secrecy. All I know is that different sets of guides will be conveying me out to a safe place in Andor. More knowledge is kept from me, for my own safety. To think that just recently I had a promising future at the Lord Dragon's School of Cairhien, and now I am shuffled through dark woods along horsethief's trails!

Alas, the light fades and I must set my pen aside for now. We leave again at daybreak.

Fourth Day after the Feast of Abram

We made good progress across southern Cairhien this day. No sign of the Aes Sedai pursuing me. It is still somewhat surprising to think of Aes Sedai wanting to capture me, but alas I suppose it shall be a fact of life for me, at least for the time being. I regret having to leave behind the great library as the Library of Cairhien, as well as the accompaniment of such great minds as the ones the Lord Dragon gathered at his School. However, my guides say that the library at our destination is not too much inferior to theirs. Obviously, this means we are going to a major city . . . Caemlyn, perhaps? The Black Tower wouldn't have a library, so we are obviously not heading there. No matter, so long as I can continue my work and continue my apprenticeship under worthy minds. All else is trivialities. I hope my career is not hampered too much by all this moving, from Whitebridge to Cairhien and then back to . . . somewhere. Granted, I am still quite young for a scholar but still, this is valuable time I could be working. I admit, others may not be worried about something like scholarship while running through the woods away from Aes Sedai, but the scholars at the School are making very rapid advancements. I could be left behind permanently! I cannot allow the great intellectual discoveries to be made by others. As I watch the world, I see The Karaethon Cycle being fulfilled all around us. If this poor luck of mine continues, the World will break and all the rules change just after I figure out an important one. Actually, that might not be so bad . . . a whole new set of rules to discover! I might be one of the foremost minds of the early Fourth Age! To think, my texts might be the ones cited by future authors. Alas, for all my attempts to divine the underlying principles of the universe, I cannot yet predict future events with any degree of accuracy. Just as everyone else, I shall learn what tomorrow holds after the rising of the sun.

Seventh Day after the Feast of Abram

We have finally arrived. I cannot believe a place of this splendor lies in Western Andor, so close to the encroaching Seanchan! Yet here it exists, such a paradox. This place, my guides tell me, is called the Grey Tower, as it is a blend of both the White and Black Towers, a refuge for Channlers of both sexes. There must be great mutual trust for both of them to live and work together so closely! I am now technically enrolled as a Soldier, but the Master of Soldiers assures me that no actual soldiering shall be required of me. I yearn to head for the Library at once, but unfortunately it seems most of my days shall be consumed between classes and chores. The classes shall be tolerable, but if the rest of my time is filled with chores, then when will I have time for my research? I suppose the theory is to lend some discipline to the new trainees. Whether I like it or not, this is the hand the Creator dealt me. At least there are historians and philosophers here to le arn from; it will not just be instruction in channeling and politics. They even have their own presses, so I'll even be able to publish my theories.
