Jedin Pori's life had been anything but quiet, having been raised among the Dedicated of his father?s school for men who could channel. It had really only been seven years since his Father Aljen and his pupils had founded a permanent school for the training of Dedicated. Before that they had been hunted by the Atha?an Saidar woman who could channel, because of their fear of men wielding the One Power. Those days had long since passed. His mother Seri had been instrumental in convincing the Atha?an Saidar that Saidin was clean and that the Dedicated trained by her husband were safe.

Aljen himself had imposed three oaths that he had said were sworn by channelers in his native world. Though Aljen had lamented not having what he called an Oath Rod, the oaths had helped ease the minds of many when they thought of a man who could channel.

It had been a few months since Jedin himself had began his training as a soldier at the school, but now he, his father, and mother, as well as many of the Dedicated were riding out into the woods, the journey had already taken several days, and Jedin had no idea how much longer they would travel or where they were going.

Eventually the traveling party was met by two men that seemed to appear out of nowhere; Dedicated from the school by there uniforms, though Jedin was not sure who they were.

"I take it you are here to see the stone, Master Instructor Aljen?" asked one of the dedicated that met them.

?You did find one then? Yes, take me to it,? was the the answer his father gave the man, and then Jedin followed when his father gestured for him and his mother.

?Son,? his father started, ?The Dedicated here have unearthed an ancient relic from before the Age of Legends; what people in my native world call a portal stone.? He cleared his throat before continuing. ?As you know I only raise the men here to the rank of Dedicated as that was all I obtained before coming to this world. Jedin there is much knowledge of the power in that world that we do not have.?

?Father?? asked Jedin finding himself confused, as he did not know what his father was trying to get at, nor why he was in an oddly somber mood.

?Jedin your mother and I have decided to ask you to use the portal stone and travel to my native world. There you will become a soldier of the Grey Tower . We need you to study and bring back the knowledge that we do not have; we need you to become an Asha?man. ?I would go myself but I can not leave my family or my men,? his father finished.

?But?? Jedin stated, just to be cut off by his mother.

?My son, my son, I know you think little of the power you can channel now, but you have more power then you know. Fear not?

It was true Jedin had always looked to his father and known how strong he was, and how talented he was in the power as well. Impossible shoes to fill it seemed to Jedin.

He pondered the words for some time before responding, ?I?ll go,? and his father smiled.

?Good my son. You?ll do me proud.? And with that his mother reached down and gave her son a tight embrace.

In their conversation, Jedin had not realized how far they had gone. They were now standing before a massive pillar covered in strange runes. ?Is this it?? Jedin asked.

?Yes,? stated Aljen, ?You will need to channel into this symbol to make it to the world I?m sending you to? and he handed him a page with an arrow symbol scribed on it.

?But how will I get back?? asked Jedin.

?You will have to find the Ter?angreal that sent me here. That will be your key to coming home until we can learn the symbol for this world.?

Jedin nodded as he heard his father's answer, and they dismounted and walked over to the column.

Jedin put his hand on the stone and felt the runes. The stone felt slick, and metallic. Soon he found the symbol he was looking for, and then his father stopped him.

?Jedin, before you go I have something for you.? His father then handed him a pack. ?Among the provisions packed for you, you will find a few letters of instruction, and information on an oath that needs to be fulfilled. See that you follow the instructions I have left for you and make use of the gift I left in there as well.?

Now it was Aljen?s turn to give his son an embrace, ?Goodbye my son,? and with that he stepped away from the portal stone.

Jedin then seized the Power the way he had been taught, and focused it on the rune his father had told him to use.

Nothing happened. He drew more power, and then more. He was holding more then he had ever before; so much that he was in pain from it. He knew he was too weak, and then? flicker?
