Jaren Marle is an Andoran Yellow Asha'man of the Grey Tower.

Description

The first things people usually notice about Jaren are his small stature, a mop of unruly blond curls and a bright smile. Standing at roughly 5’7’’ he’s not very tall and he knows it, but anyone trying to intimidate him with sheer size will not find him an easy target. He's very comfortable in his body and it shows in the way he moves, easy and graceful though not in a deadly warrior kind of way.

He's slim and not very muscular, with the pale complexion and blue-grey eyes common among Andorans. He has a thin mouth that looks most comfortable in a slightly wistful smile, and a sharp nose that may or may not have been broken once or twice. Despite the nose, he’s better described as pretty than handsome, though his smile is the only truly remarkable quality about his looks.

Around the Tower he usually wears the Asha’man uniform, fitted to perfection and immaculately maintained. Out of the Tower or for special occasions he favours the Andoran style, in the latest fashion and finest materials; his one concession to vanity.

Jaren is first and foremost a Healer; he cares deeply and tends to place the needs of those he cares about before his own. He’s a very casually affectionate person and when he likes someone, he’s not afraid to show it.

To those who don’t know him, he may seem like an unusually soft person for an Asha’man. He’s kind and gentle, willing to give most people a chance, but mistaking that for weakness of character would be a mistake. He’ll get along with almost anyone as much as any given situation requires, but he won’t tolerate having his boundaries disrespected.

Biography

He was born the third child of a reasonably successful wine merchant from Caemlyn; he has an older brother, Stevan; an older sister, Malian; and a younger sister, Erin. Though his brother, by virtue of being older, was always expected to inherit the business one day, Jaren and his sisters were given the same education (or very nearly; the sisters were not given even the rudimentary instruction in swordfighting that the brothers received) and they all learnt their letters and numbers from an early age.

Jaren was a fairly introverted child, more interested in books than the world outside, until Stevan came of age and was given more responsibility over the business in Caemlyn. At this point their father began to take Jaren with him on his trips to meet with business associates in other cities and countries, a privilege that had previously been Stevan’s. The exposure to other cultures and different people eventually drew Jaren out of his shell and he learnt to be sufficiently sociable around people, and to everyone’s surprise, he found that he loved the life on the road. By the time he reached adulthood, he had been from Illian to Tar Valon and most places in between, and he had no intention of being tied down to the business in Caemlyn; Stevan was welcome to that part.

When Jaren was twenty, his younger sister Erin suddenly fell ill. She recovered quickly, but then it happened again, and again, worse each time, until the last time there happened to be Aes Sedai from the White Tower staying at an inn nearby. She was fetched, and she was able to confirm that Erin’s illness was actually the reaction to untrained channelling. Despite their father’s protests, the Aes Sedai bundled Erin up and carted her off to Tar Valon; she said Malian had the ability to learn as well but that she was too old to be enrolled in the Novice Book and so the older sister was left behind. Jaren and Stevan, being male, were never even considered. Stevan seemed to be fine with that, as he was married already with a child on the way and had no ambitions beyond seeing the family business flourish and living out his life in comfort.

Jaren was mildly disappointed, but for the moment life was good as it was; he was able to travel and nothing too tedious was expected of him, so when his father strictly forbade him to go even near the Black Tower, he obeyed. For a while. Some years later, however, the pressure to get married and start a family of his own went up a notch and he began to reconsider his loyalties. Eventually he was spending most of his time abroad, only sending letters to Caemlyn with communications from business associates and prospective deals; he knew that if he cut ties to his family completely, he would lose the access to their financial assets, but marriage was really not something he wanted to do just yet despite being in his mid twenties.

Finally a message from his father reached him as he was in Arad Doman; a match had been made in his absence and he was ordered to return home at once. The tone of the letter was such that Jaren had reason to expect that his father had people out looking for him. It also stood to reason that the surroundings of the Black Tower would be especially carefully watched, considering his interest in learning whether he could channel.

Of course, he was fairly sure that his father wouldn’t think to worry about him heading to the Grey Tower instead… And that’s what he decided to do.
