Jaime Saren is an Amadician Whitecloak.

Description

At twenty-eight years old, Jaime Saren reached the peak of physical prowess. The boyish look that clinged to him for so long gave way to the features of a strong, battle hardened warrior. His face is dominated by high cheekbones, a strong jaw, thick chin, defined nose, and thin lips. Some have said he had a nose too big for his face, but none would argue that the Light blessed him with good looks. His eyebrows were low, giving him a near constant look of smoldering anger. In the rare case he smiled, Jaime flashed a mouth full of straight, white teeth. The hair on his chin and jaw was never allowed to grow more than a day without a close shave.

His shoulders were angled up towards the back of his neck, his body hard and firm from a life of battle. Jaime never ceased practicing with a variety of heavy blades, building up a great deal of muscle. Each morning Jaime ran, setting a swift pace through the city of Amador, or the surrounding countryside, easily covering 2 leagues or more in distance. Few could outlast his endurance in a spar.

Jaime was not quick to anger, but his voice was always firm, his tone demanding obedience. He was forgiving, not harsh, but he never hesitated to dole out punishment or retribution when required. Having never disobeyed an order in his life, Jaime was the ideal soldier. He would always stop a patrol to help someone in need, a trait that not all of his brother’s in arms agreed with. Laughter was seldom heard from Jaime, though not for a lack of humor. He merely failed to see the humor in the crude and often violent nature of the men around him. Many of his men found happiness in their cups, or the arms of a different whore each night. Jaime did not share their appetites.

Biography

Jaime’s mother died in childbirth. She had been confined to her bed for most of the pregnancy, barely able to speak or eat. Jaime was born so small they didn’t expect him to live. His father accused the midwife of being a darkfriend and had her rounded up by the Inquisitors. She was found in her home the next day, dead, with an empty poison bottle in hand.

There was little love found in his home after that. Though his father was attentive, presiding over Jaime’s studies himself. He was taught sword forms and battle strategy from the day he could stand on two feet and speak more than a few words. They ate their meals together each day, in silence. Jaime spent much of his time in the Fortress of the Light, standing at attention by his father’s side, never permitted to speak. At the end of every day, his father would ask him to repeat all of the things he had heard. Leaving out a single detail earned a strike to the face from his father’s hand. Jaime didn’t know it at the time, but he was being taught the importance of Children politics. A skill that served him well in his own career.

Little of importance happened in his adolescent years. He strove to make his father proud in everything he did, the pats on the back were the closest thing to displays of affection he could coax from him. At seventeen, Jaime was permitted to pledge the oath underneath the Dome of Light, and assigned to a Lord Captain whom his father knew well. Jaime was twenty-four before he saw his father again. They exchanged handshakes. His father’s gaze lingered on him a moment, he nodded and left. After that reunion, Jaime was silent, requesting solitary night watch for months.

For nearly a decade, Jaime served under the command of a Lord Captain who shared his passion for bringing the Light to those who needed it. At twenty-seven, an encounter with a band whole claimed allegiance to the Dragon left the Lord Captain maimed, and unable to lead. The new Lord Captain was a cruel man, more loyal to the High Inquisitor than the Lord Captain Commander. Under the new command, Jaime was promoted to Senior Lieutenant. The men in the company had a great deal of respect for Jaime, and his close relationship with the previous Lord Captain.

Jaime’s temperament had always been mild. In recent years, he had been troubled by developments within the Children. Their order was founded on the principles of the Light. Upholding order and righteousness in the never ending fight against the Shadow. Now, everyone was too suspicious of one another. The Shadow was spreading, of that there was no doubt, but men and women were being put to the question without motive or cause. Jaime was sure even he would confess his love for the Dark One if subjected to an Inquisitor’s blade.

As of late, Jaime had become increasingly aware that his life lacked happiness. Most of his men found small joys in gambling, drinking, and whoring. None of those things appealed to Jaime. He spent most of his time in the practice yards, with his nose in a book, or on patrols with a small number of his trusted friends, who wouldn’t report his attempts to aid the poor, weak, or infirm.

Lineage

Jaime is an only child. For centuries, the men in his family have sworn their lives and loyalty to the Children of the Light. He never knew his mother, and his father ceased to be a father the day Jaime too pledged his life to follow The Way of the Light and donned the sunburst cloak. Becoming a Child of the Light was never a choice. It was an expectation.
