Jahn Salyavin is a Kandori Gaidin of the Grey Tower.

Description

Jahn stands a little over six feet with a muscular build. His dark hair is cut short, but is often disheveled. Though he doesn't have a beard, he seems to have a permanent five o'clock shadow. His narrow eyes are dark green, ringed with brown, and tend to have a pinched glare about them. His features are angular, adding to his air of severity. He tends to be tanner than most Kandori, but not as dark as a Domani. He has a wicked scar near his left hip and a slight limp that grows more pronounced when he's tired.

Although he does come across as grim, Jahn has a dark sense of humor that he shows to anyone he might actually like. He seems straightforward, but he's excellent at putting on whatever front he needs. He has a touch of arrogance that seems typical in men who can channel until he's around his Aes Sedai. With her, he because extremely deferential, as if afraid she might strike him down at any moment.

Biography

Jahn Salyavin was born under the name Joss Drinjara. His father was a Kandori mercenary and his mother a Domani apothecary. He spent most of his youth in Kandor, learning the basics of the sword trade from his father. When he was sixteen, the family moved to Bandar Eban, where his mother set up a permanent shop. Joss frequently got into trouble with the City Guard. However, a young lieutenant named Suresh Ardashir took him under his wing and began giving him assignments. This grew into a full time job where Joss would go undercover into different disreputable mercenary companies to see who was smuggling.

After a number of years of this, Ardashir sent him on a longer mission: he wanted eyes and ears on Hama Valon. And so he went to join the Grey Tower under the name Jahn Salyavin. It turned out he could be taught to channel, and he surprised himself by working hard at his classes. But after ten years, he'd only reached the rank of Dedicated and it was understood it would be unlikely he'd ever attain the rank of Asha'man.

That was when he received word that his mother and father, who'd taken to traveling outside the city to ply her apothecary trade, and been killed by Whitecloaks. Jahn deserted his place at the Tower to return home. Given his low potential, no one attempted to find him so far as he knows. But in the process of fleeing, he was attacked by bandits. Though he managed to fight them off, they severely injured his leg, which went untreated for the remaining weeks it took to get to Bandar Eban.

He and Ardashir worked out a plan for him to slide into the "employ" of a known Whitecloak agitator named Josiah Goodwind. Eventually, they were able to kill him with the aid of Suresh's sister, Saowynn. However, in the process, Jahn had been asked to do things which has caused him a great deal of shame. As a way of repaying his debt to Saowynn, as well as hoping it would mitigate any punishment he might face from the M'Hael, he begged her to bond him, which she eventually did.
