Biography

Imari y Shillbar was the youngest child of a Lord of the Land in Altara. The small estate of the family was located on the west bank of the river Elbar, not far from the place where this river and the river Sharia come together.

The House of Shillbar was small, and had always been small, but is was wealthy and solid.

Over the centuries, the lords and ladies of Shillbar had always ruled the estate like it were a kingdom, although, at least in name, loyal to whichever House holding the Throne of Winds in Ebou Dar at the time. The farmers working on the fields around the mansion never even considered to call themselves people of Altara; in their view they were the people of Shillbar. This is not unusual in Altara, which is only a country in name, but it was unusual indeed that House Shillbar had never even tried to claim the throne.

It was a good home Imari spent her first twelve years in. Lord Sovan and lady Alila gave all their six children a good education, and learned them honesty and pride. As the youngest daughter of a small, but rich and solid House, she was probably awaiting a good future as the wife some other minor lords son.

It was a couple of weeks before Imari's thirteenth birthday that things got terribly wrong. The location of the estate, near Amadicia, had never been a safe one; the strategic position had always made the Children of the Light try to take over the estate, but up to then they had never succeeded. It was only when they declared lord Sovan and his wife to be darkfriends of the worst kind, that they managed to scare the farmers of Shillbar into rebelling against their lord. Escorted by this angry mob, the Whitecloaks came to arrest the lord and lady, but things got out of hand. On that fatal evening, the mansion burned down to the ground. All of the family got killed in the fire, except for the youngest daughter and the oldest son. It was on this day Imari developed a deep hate of the Children of the Light.

Imari and her brother Doran fled to Ebou Dar, where they ended up in the Harad. Doran, being six years older, somehow managed to make a living for the both of them, at first by committing every possible crime, later by doing jobs a little more decent.

It was in this environment most of Imari's character was formed. She quickly learned to survive, by using her dagger effectively when needed, and by developing an extra sense to see trouble coming from far of and making sure to stay out of the way. The years she spent in the Harad made her cynical, caring about nothing but herself and her brother because she soon discovered that in the Harad everything else is a disappointment anyway. A though enviroment created a though young women, but also a strong woman, and a sober one.

She was not yet eighteen when another disaster took place. Doran, the only person she truly cared about, the only one that reminded her of the life she used to live, was killed. It couldn't have been worse, because he didn't even die with honor, in a duel. Some coward stabbed him in the back while sleeping.

The last remaining bond with her old life was cut, and at first Imari wanted to give up. She just wanted to let herself get killed as well, which isn't very hard in the Harad, but she was a survivor; hadn't she been, she would have been killed long ago. So not before long, to stop herself from doing stupid things like getting into duels she couldn't possibly win, she decided to leave Ebou Dar. On a stolen horse and with a pocket full of stolen gold, she eventually did leave the city. She didn't have a clue about where to go, but she didn't care. Everywhere out of Ebou Dar would do fine.

Imari spent about a year on the road. It was, after her youth on her father's estate, the happiest time of her life. It was total freedom; she didn't have anything or anybody in the world, but that also meant she had nothing to loose. Yes, she was happy, but her travels had to end somewhere. And they did. Although she didn't know it yet, her destiny called when she met this Aes Sedai in a tavern in Caemlyn.

A couple of months later, it was a tall, olive skinned young woman that stood before the Aes Sedai of the Grey Tower. She was skinny, as if she hadn't had enough to eat for a long time, and with her long brown hair and her big brown eyes she looked naive and innocent, but there was something in those eyes that made the Aes Sedai think that considering Imari y Shillbar innocent could be a deadly mistake. The girl had only found out she could learn to channel moments ago, but she seemed very determined to learn. Determination was, of course, a good attribute for a novice, but this one would probably give a lot of trouble when it would come to accepting the rules that apply for novices. On the other hand, there was not much future for Imari if she would not be allowed into the Tower. The Aes Sedai sighted and picked up her pen. A new Novice of the Grey Tower was about to enter.
