Gail Cartwright is a Ji'val of the Grey Tower.

Description

She's a plain girl of average height, her brown hair is cut boyishly short and her brown eyes are cold and unfeeling. She is fourteen.

She only likes one person, two she tolerates and hates the rest. She's sarcastic but keeps her head down due to being abused. Both at her home and here at the Tower. She jumps at loud noises still, though she has lost her eating like it's her last meal. She doesn't trust adults, feeling the only one who will look out for her is Nesir.

Biography

Gail is the youngest child of Dale Cartwright. Her mother died giving birth to her and since her father never speaks of her mother, she doesn't know her name. She has two older brothers, Deleno, and Denar. Her father is a drunkard, so though he is a skill cartwright he can't keep a job longer than a year. He would hit her and her brothers for just about anything, the booze being gone, having booze, getting a job, losing it again, moving.

She doesn't know where she's from because by the time she was nine she had lived in several of the countries surrounding the Mountains of Mist. Finally fed up with the abuse, that now even her brothers piled on her, she left. First she stayed away from cities and towns, lest they found her and hauled her back to her father. But lack of food made her bold and after one of her begging sessions, she over heard a woman with skin as white as porcelain and a face as ageless as time talking to a gruff man with a heavy sword strapped to his back. They were asking directions to a place called Grey Tower. Apparently, they had found a girl with the warrior talent and needed to bring her there.

Surprised that they took girls for that she listened closely to the directions and then waited a couple days before setting out.

Once she reached the Grey Tower, she requested to see the Gaidin Captain, who though she was a tad young (being 12 at the time) allowed her to sign the Drin'far'ji book.

She hadn't been at the Tower for long when she went to the Feast of Lights. The Gaidin Captain told Nesir Aeser to watch her, as she hoped that maybe having a charge would keep the lad from trouble. Unfortunately, one of Nesir's bullies took her out on the dance floor forcibly and she caught the eye of a drunk Grey Asha'man. He made her take him to his rooms, where he raped her all night and tossed her out at dawn. It was as she tried to stumble to the Infirmary that Nesir found her. He saved her life.

He taught her how to fight.
