First Arch

Tyra stepped through the Arch. The light flashed and she stumbled. The ground had changed from the smooth stone floors of the Tower to a rough grassy road. It was deeply rutted from numerous wagons. She could hear the sounds of a festival before her. When she looked down she found herself wearing a dress similar to ones the women in the village near her home had worn.

The way back will come but once...

A young man came running down the path toward her. Tyra pulled back from him, afraid of the blow she was sure would come. The man frowned and held out his hand.

"Come on Tyra. Today is the day we tell everyone. You aren't going to hide out here are you?" He didn't seem to be planning anything, but Tyra didn't move. Finally he gave an exasperated sigh and grabbed her hand, pulling her along.

"I've heard of people being afraid of announcing their Promise, but it's usually the men!" He smiled to show her he was joking. Tyra just looked at him in wonder. She had admired Elwin all her life, but to be promised to him? Her doubts faded until all that remained was a nagging doubt. She pushed it aside and followed him into the town.

"Tyra! I almost thought you'd be late. So today you will tell me your secret?" Her father's eyes told her he already knew and he was pleased. One of the other men clapped him on the back, congratulating him.

Elwin drew her aside into a doorway, cupping her face in his hands and leaning down to kiss her gently. She brought her hand up to gently touch his hair, and tracing the side of his face. She had dreamed of this day for so long.

"Today we will never forget..." His voice trailed off quietly as he spoke into her ear. A flash of light caught Tyra's attention causing her to shift in his embrace. A glowing gateway formed just a little way away.

The way back will come but once...

A memory flashed and tears formed in her eyes. This wasn't where she was meant to be, this wasn't to be. She broke away from Elwin; the confused and hurt look in his eyes tore at her most as she ran for the gateway. She didn't dare slow for fear she would stop. Tyra thanked the Creator that he didn't call her name. She didn't know if she could have kept going.

Second Arch

Tyra walked into the Infirmary with confidence. She straightened the yellow fringed shawl over her shoulders. She smiled at some of the novices helping other Aes Sedai and Asha'man. A class watched wide eyed as a teacher from the Yellows Healed one of the patients. Tyra remembered being in that class. Another memory tugged at her mind, but she ignored it. There was work to be done.

The way back will come but once...

A small hand tugged at her sleeve. A young novice with golden hair stood at her elbow. She was even shorter than Tyra herself. She must have come to the Tower very young.

"Tyra Sedai? We need your help. One of the women..." Tyra nodded immediately and turned to follow her. Tyra's Talent for Healing had developed even further during her time at the Tower. There was no question of her reason for joining the Yellow Ajah.

"What is the problem?" She said briskly to reassure the young girl. Despite the girl's valiant effort to keep her face Aes Sedai smooth her lips trembled and her eyes betrayed her worry.

The woman thrashed on the bed despite the sisters trying to hold her down. Her arms were strong. Her shoulder length hair was as dark as Tyra's own. Her clothes were worn as if from a long journey, but it was easy to see she was Aiel.

"She just arrived this morning. There is something in her mind." The sister caught off as the woman renewed her efforts. Tyra tried to touch the woman to Delve her, but she twisted away. "We can do nothing for her. Only you can save her." Tyra was about to reach again when the woman when she noticed something. The woman's hair, it was like her own. As was her small stature and form. Then her eyes snapped open and Tyra knew.

"Mother!" But the memory tugged at her.

The way back will come but once...

"Help her!" The other sister demanded, "Help her or lose your Ajah!" Tyra shook her head, tears blocking her vision. She could save neither now. She spun running for the gateway she knew was there lest she stay and truly lose the Ajah she hoped to join.

Third Arch

The Tower was dark. Here and there a few fires still flickered in the wind that swept through the gapping holes. Tyra stumbled over a pile of rubble. She looked at the destruction in amazement. How could it have happened? She didn't think the Tower could ever have fallen. Not this way. She knew it couldn't be this way.

The way back will come but once...

A small sound behind her made Tyra spin around and embrace the source. In the dim light she could see a form sprawled on the ground. Even now the white dress was easily recognizable under the dirt and stains. She dropped to her knees beside the girl.

"Tyra? Tyra Sedai?" Her voice was rough. Tyra reached out and grabbed the girl's hand.

"Yes, it's me. What happened? Where are the others?" She asked calmly though her heart was beating wildly. This couldn't have happened. It couldn't!

"I don't know. It was so fast. Please, find the others. We have to stop it." Tyra's fist tightened as the girl went limp. She still breathed, but Tyra knew she had to take her advice. She staggered to her feet. Embracing sadiar here was not wise. Whoever had done this would be brought to justice. Rage mixed with the feeling of euphoria sadiar brought. Tyra tried to suppress it, knowing the danger, but it welled up over her control.

A weave formed in her mind wanting to rip out of her, but Tyra pushed it away. She would not destroy. But she had work to do. This was a wound, to the Tower and to her life. Though the rage shrank it didn't disappear. She had to do something to fix this, something to make it right.

Her hand traced the dusty stone walls, still smooth in places. She remembered when things had been different. Tyra took her hand away to clamber over another pile of loose stone. She had to find something to make sense of this. She remembered...

The way back will come but once...

Again the silver gateway flickered. She couldn't go now. She had to set this right. All her life she had wanted to Heal the destruction wrought by conflicts. She couldn't go now when it touched her life as well.

The way back will come but once...

It echoed insistently in her head. Tears formed in her eyes, but she didn't allow them to spill over. Dust rose in a cloud as she slid down the pile. Small stone fragments clattered to the ground. Tyra threw herself through the gateway to make it disappear. As she closed her eyes she kept telling herself that the Tower would still be there on the other side.
