Amara sat attentively in the class. She was appreciative that Sheralina had agreed to lecture her. With her Novice training, she was out of synch with the rest of the Ji'alantin and Ji'alantar. Now that she had found a bondmate, Amara wanted more than anything to be raised as soon as she could be. She had had little to no contact with any form of Shadowspawn- merely knowing the basics of rats and ravens- which was quite dangerous in a Warder. Therefore, she was taking this lecture in Shadowspawn, and would pass in all of her assignments at once.

Amara dipped the pen in ink and began writing.

Shadowspawn Assignment
by Amara Moran

"List five ways that these vermin can be used by the Shadow:"

  • Ravens and crows are spies, who carry what they have seen to the Myrddraal
  • Rats perform a similar function in cities, the information pulled from their mind by the Myrddraal.
  • The birds are excellent for aerial attacks
  • They have an affinity for death, carrion and decay. Seeing them brings this association, which may bring panic or fear to the populace
  • Not ALL vermin are spies, which is the perfect disguise for those that are.

"Now, I want you to tell me what are the throwbacks of trollocs, what are three animals human were mixed with to create trollocs, and what is the only other thing that Trollocs fear almost as much as they fear Fades?"

The human throwbacks of trollocs are the Myrddraal. Animal throwbacks are also produced, but they die.

  • Bears
  • Boars
  • Wolves
  • Goats
  • Wildcats
  • Rams
  • Eagles

were mixed to create trollocs.

Shadar Logoth, a city, is feared by both Myrddraal and Trollocs. Trollocs fear it almost more than Myrddraal.

"I want you to tell me at least three other names for Myrddraal and why the Fades are considered the weak link in a fist of trollocs."

Myrddraal are also called:

  • Shadowmen
  • Halfmen
  • Lurks
  • Fetches
  • Fades
  • Neverborn

Myrddraal control the trollocs by fear. They can link with a number of trollocs and take control of their minds and wills, creating a deadly force. However, if the Myrddraal is killed, then the trollocs controlled by it die too.

"Now, today, I want you to tell me first what does a Draghkar do to its victim before it kills them, and second, how would you fight such a creature?"

A draghkar has the ability to lure it's victim into a hypnotic trance, with a song that compels the victim closer. It kills by draining the soul. A draghkar is not a skilled warrior, nor is it able to carry or use weapons. Therefore, I would block my hearing so the draghkar could not attack me, and subsequently dispose of it.

"Today's assignment, tell me the weakness of a Darkhound and tell me if you think the reigning theory that they exist slightly in this reality is true or not."

Darkhounds are as likely to turn on each other as on their intended victim. I would agree with the reigning theory; as their manifestations appear in this reality, yet they do not affect this reality totally. Thus they are quite possibly "out of phase" with this reality.

"Now, I want you to give me another name for these assassins as well as how you would defend against them. I also would like your speculation on what could possibly be worth giving your soul away."

The Assassins are called Grey Men, also known as the Soulless. Since they are almost impossible to see, I would suggest that a shield made with the One Power would be most likely to be successful in defending against them. I cannot imagine something worth giving your soul away, although for others, I could speculate that gold, power and the loss of everything that you care about are potential reasons.

1) What are the weaknesses of the various Shadowspawn we talked about today? Name at least three different Shadowspawn.

  • Trollocs are excessively lazy, and will do nothing but kill indiscriminately unless controlled.
  • Myrddraal are afraid of running water and will avoid crossing it wherever possible.
  • Draghkar have no weapons against the deaf
  • Darkhounds are likely to turn on each other
  • Gray Men are only useful as assassins and are close to useless in battle.
  • Crows, Ravens and Rats are spies and disease carriers only, they have no direct killing ability unless acting as a swarm.

2) What is the best way to defeat a fist of trollocs?
Kill the Myrddraal controlling it.

3) Who was the creator of the Shadowspawn?
Aginor, formerly known as Ishar Morrad Chuain.

Extra Credit: What is a gholam?
A Gholam is Shadowspawn, created to kill an Aes Sedai and unable to be hurt by the One Power. They are fast, strong, and cunning. They can get anywhere. They cannot be harmed by normal weapons but can be harmed by Mat's medallion. Six were created and one is known to be currently in existence.

Complete, Amara thought. She folded the paper once neatly and handed it in for marking.
