Peyton felt her hand bunch her skirts, the knuckles whitening as she forced herself to sit still. The list of her infractions was quite lengthy, although in her heart she knew many of them had been times she had merely been caught instead of others. She knew she had been risking punishment, but when she had originally signed on to the Novice Roster she had hoped it would be the start of a grand adventure, like in a glee man’s tale. Instead it had been long hours of chores, with a couple Accepted taking distinct pleasure in taking their own frustrations out on the Novices.

Biting her cheek to keep from smirking, she couldn’t help but picture the way the Accepted had looked when they had walked right into a cloud of filth and muck she’d whipped up with Saidar.

Which had led to her being sent to the Farm. The Mistress had been too busy with all the other new arrivals to take any extra time with a wayward waif, fit for nothing but mending shirts and tending brats.

The Farm had been rough, hard work and labour that felt much too similar to her childhood home. She didn’t mind working hard, but having seen the Aes Sedai; working with the wonders of the Grey Tower, and the amazing thrill of the One Power, it had been extra painful to return to a dull, ordinary life.

“You do not be listening to a word. Child, you do be asking for trouble if you attend your teachers like this,” said Morena, the woman who had been in charge of her during her stint at the Farm. Peyton flushed and realized she had been caught with her thoughts wandering in all directions.

“Apologies. I am just eager to return,” Peyton said, with a much meekness as she could summon.

“You do no be fooling me with those sugar eyes girl. But the best of us have grit and steel. If this place could break you, there would be little point in returning. But be careful, mind your teachers. I have a record of straightening out the toughest cases, and if you break that and come back here. Well, your grandchildren will be off their apron strings before you can sit,” tumbled Morena, her demeanour enough to let Peyton know she meant it.

Peyton felt the familiar call of a woman channeling, and knew the Gateway was being readied for Hama Valon. Nodding to Morena, she curtsied and made her way to the square.
