The evening was like any other. Mirin returned to her room four hours after Low, carrying the books and papers she had borrowed from the library. She bathed, and then wrote in her journal as she waited for her hair to dry. Then, she went to bed.

The darkness boiled. Its surface bubbled with hatred, anger, and evil. One of these bubbles broke off and drifted through the Pattern, oozing through the threads. An oily tendril brushed the Grey Tower.

Mirin jerked awake. She felt a sudden sense of unease and quickly sat up. Had the Black Ajah delivered her a message in the middle of the night? They had done it before, and would certainly do it again. But as she looked around, she saw nothing out of the ordinary. Her room was organized and clean, if a bit plain; all of her belongings were in their proper places. There was no note slipped under her door. Yet she felt a wrongness, a certain taste to the air that made her uncomfortable. Heart pounding, she climbed out of bed and fumbled for her slippers. Then, she embraced saidar to create a globe of light. Out of habit, she reached for her belt pouch.

Abruptly, the world shifted. Mirin screamed and stumbled. She lost her hold of the Power. Her arms scraped a tree. A tree?!? What was going on?

She glanced around, astonished. She was standing on a gentle slope, in a forest of pine trees. Moonbeams shone down through the sharp leaves, providing a small amount of light. There was no path. And she was alone. She seemed to be stranded in the wilderness. Was she... Dreaming? Mirin was not a Dreamer but she hoped with all her heart that this was a dream. The short Cairhienin squeezed her eyes shut and, just like she had read in books, tried to exert her 'will' and Dream herself back to her warm bed.

Nothing changed.

The forest was still, but suddenly felt ominous. She stood quietly for a long minute, peering into the shadows with fear. Slowly, hesitantly, she moved forward. Leaves crunched beneath her feet. The twigs and stones were painful to step on; her thin slippers were not suited for walking outdoors. She noticed the chill in the air and shivered. The scent of pine needles drifted through the air. She inhaled. The fresh tang of cold air rushed into her lungs and she coughed. She suddenly remembered the belt pouch in her hand. Quickly, she rummaged through its contents. There were papers, ink, and pens... a single spool of thread... and a few coins.

And one apple. She stared sullenly at the fruit, and then carefully tucked it away with the rest of her belongings. Oh, how was she going to survive with just one apple?

She shivered again, and then realized that the cold may be more lethal than the threat of starvation. She could start a fire - but what could that attract? Mirin was a city girl and had never been lost in the wilderness. She had no idea what to do. She suddenly felt an urge to cry, and blinked back tears. You're training to be an Aes Sedai, she reminded herself. You're an Accepted of the Grey Tower. What would an Aes Sedai do?

Well, an Aes Sedai would be able to Travel. But Mirin did not know that weave. She hunched down on the ground in an attempt to conserve body heat. Then, she calmed her breathing and opened herself to saidar in search of comfort. The night suddenly seemed less dark. With her senses enhanced by the Power, she could sense every rustle of the leaves, feel every pebble beneath her feet, and nearly taste the scent of pine...

And she could see two people standing in the trees not too far from herself. Without regard for safety, Mirin stood and ran forward, waving her arms.

"Hey! Over here!" she called.
