Janis hadn't truly left the tower... Merely faded into the background for a while. How could he? With an Aes Sedai who loved to get into trouble, and a sister warder who needed all the help she could get keeping said Sedai in line? No no... He hadn't left. Well, aside from a trip back to Kandor, to visit the funeral of one of his old friends... And a subsequent month's stay there to assist in the defense against the shadow until a new commander could be found to shore up the Kandoran Free Corps.
But... At the same time... The Aielman found himself looking out over the ramparts of the Tower, into the nearby city... Then his gaze turned to the forests, the mountains... The fading sun in the western sky... Somehow, it seemed like he had become distant from all those he had once loved, all those he had cared for, fought for, fought BESIDE. He found himself remembering Nikolai, and the laughs they had shared... Caden Ives, and the battle beneath the Tower during the Ripples of Shadow... A dozen friends, a dozen mentors... And somehow, he had allowed himself to let those friendships slide... He didn't know how, or why... Just that it had happened.
Well, he resolved, a determined smile gracing his handsome face. No more... No more a recluse, no more a standoff Gaidin... It was time to get involved again. The vacation had been nice... But now it was time to return to where he was truly needed. And so, with a new spring in his step, the big man turned from the ramparts and headed back into the tower itself. It was time to go home.
