Re: Part One, Lesson One: The Equipment
Amairwyn Serenya

Amairwyn had always meant to take a bow class as an Accepted, but for some reason had never gotten around to it. Despite her general dislike of weapons, and the fact that Shienaran women weren't usually taught combat, her mother had insisted on basic bow training, for her own safety. Amairwyn was neither very good or skilled with the bow, however- not to mention she had forgotten most of what she knew- which was why she was starting with one of the basic classes.

After listening to the teacher talk about the bow through her interpreter, Amairwyn wondered over to the bow selection, looking over both the longbow and composite bows. After trying both of them, and studying both carefully, she finally decided on the composite bow, for several reasons, the first being that Shienarans commonly fought from horseback, so it was the bow she was most familiar with. Also, she doubted she had the upper body strength for the longbow, so the smaller composite would be the better choice for her, she knew.

Re: Part One, Lesson Two: Care & Feeding of your New Bow
Amairwyn Serenya

The second lesson was on taking care of and stringing bows. Even she had known bows needed special care, like any weapon, but he had never thought much else about it.She listened carefully to the lesson, filing away all the information about bow care and how to string a bow in her head.

When it was time for the practice part of the lesson, Amairwyn picked up her bow and a length of string, going over the instructions in her head before beginning.

Taking the string, she made two small loops in it before sliding it over the bottom groove. Easy enough she thought, now for the harder part. Amairwyn placed the bow on her foot and drew the string taut, before stepping over it with her other foot and bending it carefully.

Next, she tried sliding the other loop over the top groove. Unfortunately, the string was slippery and kept trying to slide off, but she finally got it over. Finished.

Re: Part One, Lesson Three: Be Aware of your Surroundings
Amairwyn Serenya

Awareness Amairwyn thought, as the Gaidar began the third lesson. She knew being aware of your surroundings was important, of course, but she had always had the unfortunate tendency to 'slip into her own world', as her father had put it.

Well, that I'm going to have to change, she thought grimly, turning her attention to her surroundings at the moment- the ground, the wind, and everything else around her.

Terrible Aim
Amairwyn Serenya

The next lesson was on drawing and loosing, something that was more involved than Amairwyn might have thought.

The first thing they had to learn was how to stand correctly, something she supposed made sense, in order to actually hit the target. After watching the demonstration, and filing everything away in her head, she moved until she was standing sideways, with her feet shoulder width apart and her back and left arm straight, since she was right-handed.

Easy enough she thought, moving onto to the arrows. Amairwyn picked up her bow and one of the arrows, and set the nock against the string, making sure it was on the right finger, before attempting to draw the bow with the arrow. This turned out to be harder than it looked, as every time she pulled on the string, the arrow would slip off her finger and the bow. Finally, though, she was able to draw the bow without losing her arrow.

Now, for the really hard part, she thought nervously, pointing her arrow at the targets. During the little bow training she had received in Shienar, Amairwyn had almost never hit her target, and she doubted that would have changed any. Sure enough, the first arrow she fired dropped to the ground only a few inches from her feet, which did nothing to boost her confidence. The second one was the same.

The third and fourth arrows flew a little farther, but definitely nowhere near the target. I really am terrible, she thought gloomily, pulling out the fifth, and last, arrow in the small quiver she had with her. Not only did her arrows fail to fly very far, she also kept forgetting and moving out of the combat stance they had been taught.

Taking up a sideways stance again, she aimed at the target again and fired, sighing as her arrow fell to the ground still nowhere near the target.

Well, I imagine I'll improve with practice, she thought optimistically, picking up her arrows.

Pass!
Lysira Viathene

As Lysira and Jhered walked the line, they passed by the First Scholar as she worked at her firing. She... wasn't very good, but most of the students were struggling. "It gets better," Lysira signed and Jhered spoke as they stopped beside the Aes Sedai. "Keep at it, practice whenever you can, and make sure that once you're confident in the arrow remaining with you that you pull your arm fully back and lift the bow slightly to let it keep in the air longer."

Improvement
Amairwyn Serenya

The next lesson was on aiming, something

Amairwyn truly needed practice on. She made sure to listen closely as the instructor talked, explaining about awareness and adjusting for distance. That's probably why I could never hit the target, she thought, wishing she had brought a notebook to take notes in. I wasn't adjusting my pull or position. She also took special note of the section composite bows, as that was the type she used.

When it came time to practice again, Amairwyn took up a position in front of the target, somewhat more confident now that she knew what she had been doing wrong.

Nocking an arrow, and drawing the bow, she lowered it to adjust to the distance- lifting the arrow slightly and to the side- before, raising the bow and firing. While it still didn't hit the target, at least it didn't flop to the ground in front of her this time.

A little better, she thought. The next two were the same, though her fourth arrow flew a little closer to the target. Reminding herself to keep an eye on the distance, and to hold her arm steady, she fired her last arrow, still not hitting the target, but at least managing to get close this time.

Well, at least I was somewhat better this time, she thought, packing up her bow and arrows to leave. She would need more practice, but she was improving.

OOC: Pass!
Lysira Viathene

OOC: That's what I get for replying to classes while the baby is chattering at me. I think my last reply was a little ahead of my own lessons. Sorry for any confusion, but pass all around on Part One. Will you be proceeding to Part Two?

Re: OOC: Pass!
Amairwyn Serenya

I probably won't be going on to part two at the moment, though I do intend to earn her her second point one day...

Re: OOC: Pass!
Lysira Viathene

Fair enough. Well, then, congratulations on passing the first portion of the class!

This post hereby certifies that Amairwyn Serenya has completed the First Part of the Introduction to Archery class and is Trained (1) in the Bow. You can use this post when applying for your Skill point. Congratulations!
