Beron could hardly keep his eyes open. Even the fabled stamina of a Gaidin was finally reaching it’s limit. Luckily his horse had been well trained, both of them working long hours under the watching eye of Miahala, and it knew the roads as well as he did. The sun shone bright against the Grey Tower, and he could feel the knot of emotions in his head growing ever closer. Isla Sedai, his bonded had been busy with the Infirmary, the events of the last while having taken a toll on everyone. He could feel her own fatigue, and worry through the bond and knew that as hard as he had pushed himself, she would have also.

His colour shifting cloak stirred from the wind, and he took a moment to make sure it did not cover his sword handle. The roads had been rife with bandits, white cloaks and more, so he would not let his fatigue or proximity to the Grey Tower weaken his alertness.

He had been patrolling for months, using backroads and the occasional Gateway to make deep forays into the chaotic countryside. After they had rescued a number of potential channellers from a Whitecloak camp, one commanded by Isla’s own father no less, she had been driven to keep an eye on their movements. Knowing she was needed in the Tower, Beron had used his training as both Warder and scout to stay abreast of their movements. It had been exhausting, their own scouts had been competent and well trained; often pursuing Beron for hours before he managed to double back or hide his trail. Which had meant long days of cold dry rations, his cloak the only thing to keep the weather off.

He allowed himself a moment of relaxation when the guards at the gate waved him through. He stopped to let them ensure he was meant to be there, and then proceeded to the stables. One look at his mount, had the Drin dashing for feed and brush. He was tempted to shoo them away, but he knew both Isla and the Master of Arms would be waiting for his reports. Which meant allowing the Drin to take care of his horse, while he made his way towards the Ajah Quarters. He mentally ran through the top concerns, and let the familiar noises of Drin and Ji at practice ease nerves strained from months sleeping in the wilds.
