The Brown Ajah of the Grey Tower is the Ajah of knowledge and wisdom. Often forsaking the mundane world, the Brown Ajah takes an interest in collecting history and information, as well as performing research of their own. They are not to be confused with the Indigo Ajah, who are more Power-focussed with their studies, but there are certainly areas of overlap.
There is a long standing pre-conception about the Brown Ajah not noticing the world around them, and there are those who pay little mind to their clothing or their general appearance in the name of academic pursuits. On the other hand there are those who pander to this image completely, only to turn it on its head with some appropriately timed moments of clarity. The Brown Ajah might not have the most common sense, but they are intelligent without exception.
The Brown Ajah is often associated with the running of the Library. Indeed this is one of their primary roles for the most part, ensuring that the Library runs properly and that it is always taken care of. However, it is also important to note that the Brown Ajah is the Ajah in search of knowledge and to this end, there are no small number of Browns who will go out into the big wide world conducting research and studying in other locations. The Great Library in Cairhien is a popular destination but fieldwork isn't too unusual. Of course heading out to the Blight to analyse some soil is all well and good, but it's not for everyone and a Warder or a more outdoors-savvy channeller would also be a good idea to bring along.
For the most part though, the Browns are happy in their own little bubble of research, and they are normally willing to share it as well. Browns can be found at all hours of the day in the Library, some forsaking daytime activities as there are less interruptions at night. There are numerous private vaults of restricted research material that keep many a Brown warm on a cold night, so they really can be found all over the place if you look hard enough.
The Brown Ajah are also a strong representation in the teaching force of the Tower and many Browns will teach their specialist subject to the more promising academics, as well as the more basic history and politics that aspiring Grey Tower Asha'man and Aes Sedai need to know. Some of the mundane aspects are assigned to Accepted and Dedicated as well, a good opportunity to get Brownie points if the Brown Ajah is your calling.
Browns that have gone on to have major roles in the Grey Tower's leadership include:
- Eliza Maddix, the 12th Amyrlin Seat
- Tatham Anselar, the 7th Keeper of the Chronicles and the 5th and 7th Master of Soldiers
- Chyane Liale, the 12th Keeper of the Chronicles
- Norin Maddix, the 6th Keeper of the Archives
- Deek Mythis, the 7th Keeper of the Archives and the 16th Master of Soldiers
- Murdock Mather, the 11th Keeper of the Archives
- Sarinte din Soran Storming Sky, the 5th Mistress of Novices
- Rihari al'Taihu, the 8th Master of Soldiers
- Tukal Faetrarken, the 17th Master of Soldiers
- Alyona al'Corodin, the 3rd Warder-Channeller Representative
"I want to be a Brown!"
The wonderful thing about the Brown Ajah is that if you have an interest in learning, then there is a place for you and your enquiring mind. An interest in the running of the Library is helpful but not necessarily forced, but putting in the hours as a trainee is generally encouraged. If you can find an Aes Sedai or Asha'man who studies something of interest, then that can be helpful also.
The ability to research, put long hours into studying, and absorb information is a must for any Brown. Having a subject to specialise in is also helpful. Collaborations with the Whites, Greys and Indigos can also add to the Brown experience so if there is an area of study with some overlap, do look at making some friends elsewhere just in case they come in handy. For those who might go out into the field, a savvy Yellow, Green, Red or Blue could also do the trick. There's nothing wrong with learning in a bubble but maybe leave that to the NPCs ;)
