Amayani din Caneka Black Storm is an Atha'an Miere Drin of the Grey Tower.

Description

Not one of the tallest people, Amayani reaches about 5'3" up in the sky. Her skin is deeply tanned, closer to dark brown, a bit darker then the Sea Folk usual are. Her face is small and round, considered pretty cute, with deep brown eyes slightly tilted like a cat's, and surrounded by a hair as black as the night, often braided in countless, small braids. With her little nose, carrying a chain that leads to the right ear as the custom of the Atha'an Miere, and the tattoo of a spiral, viewed from the top, on the left cheek, she's got the look of an innocent little girl. And she usually is, if she's in a good mood. But when she gets upset or angry, she can rage on like a wild storm.

Biography

Amayani was born and grew up on one of the many Sea Folk ships. She was the daughter of the ship's cook, and her father had been one of the Amayar. It never, ever happened that the Atha'an Miere mixed with the Amayar in any way, not that was spoken of at least. And Maya was the only remains of a short-lived, blinding love affair, of which her mother never spoke of. None, except her mother, knew who Maya's father was, not even the man himself, and not a soul would guess that it was one of the "less fortunate", the people who lived on the islands and never came close to the ocean. Having no father, Maya therefore grew very close to her mother, and knew she would stay by her side her whole life.

Maya had for a time gone in training with her mother to learn the art of cooking, but no matter how much she wanted to please her mother, she just couldn't get the hang of it, and her dishes never tasted as good as they should. So she left the place of the cook's apprentice to a boy just a year older. Raor, the boy, became like a brother to her, even if his mother was the Windfinder, and the two of them were at times impossible to separate. They both lived the peaceful life on the ship, and had only a handful times been ashore.

Then, one day, it all ended. Maya and Raor was ashore while the ship lay in port in Illian, looking around the city, but always staying close enough so they could see the ocean in between the houses, when a stranger, dressed in all black, came up to them. He had a stern look in his face, close to emotionless, and came right at them, or right at Raor.

"Boy," he said as he stopped in front of them, "I believe you can use the One Power. You must come with me."

"Now? At once?" Raor had replied, apparently not quite believing what the man had said. He looked at Maya, and they both knew that if it was true, they ways would part.

"No!" Maya called out, looking up at the man. She was already turned 16, Raor 17, but the man was still towering over her short height. "Raor can't go, he belongs with us."

"Child, you don't understand," the man replied, still with no sign of emotions in his face or voice. "He must come, or he could die. He needs training. But he don't have to leave right away." He turned to Raor again. "Meet me at the inn called Blue Ocean midday tomorrow, ready to leave. It's easy to find down at the harbour. And be there." With that, he turned and soon disappeared out of sight in the crowd.

Saddened, the two young headed back to the ship, and told the captain and the present crew about this. Doniana, the captain, understood who the man had been, an Asha'man from the Black Tower, and she also knew the seriousness in what he had told. When she'd been younger and worked on another ship, she'd been told about a man who had almost sunken the ship and killed them all, because he couldn't control the Power in him. He had ended his own life, because he'd burned himself out and couldn't live on. But Doni also knew the two young ones, knew how impossible they were to separate. So she told them of another place, the Grey Tower, where both men and women, channelers and non-channelers were welcome. And so it came to that Maya and Raor said goodbye to their mothers and left the ship, their lives. They had been given an amount of money from the captain, big enough for the journey to the Grey Tower to be comfortable. For it was a long journey, and over land, all the way to some where in the western Andor.
