Alinel is an Illianer, son of a well-off merchant family. As the youngest of four children, he was free to do what he wished. As such, he became a scholar, researching in particular history and mechanics.
He was always very close to his elder brother, Janiran, and on one occasion was persuaded to accompany him on a trip to Shienar to investigate a commodity. However on this occasion, bandits attacked the two of them and their scantily guarded wagons. Virtually untrained in the sword he carried as a deterrent, Alinel found himself cowering under one of the wagons as his brother and the guards attempted to fight off the bandits, who severely outnumbered them. For a while it seemed as if they might have a chance after all, and Alinel decided to emerge. He was just in time to see one of the attackers cut his brother down from behind as another two engaged him in front. Enraged, he found himself shaking, and the earth around him seemed to shake in sympathy. Then he blacked out.
Alinel awoke in the middle of a circle of devastation. The bandits, and the guards, were all in various states of dead and dying. The earth was torn and cracked as if a very localised earthquake and forest fire had ravaged it. And his brother was dying. Alinel did his best to save him, and somehow he seemed to get a little better. But in the end they were too far from real help, and Janiran died.
In time, after regaining some semblance of reality, Alinel realised that he was a channeler. There was no other explanation for the state of the ground around him, and even his brother’s mild recovery. Having heard of the Grey Tower, he made his way there and asked to be tested.
Alinel has a block, which will soon be discovered. He is unable to channel any elements except Earth and Fire, and those only when he is scared.
